I heard a story the other day, an amusing story, about a boy who was
wandering around the narthex of a large downtown church one Sunday morning
and stopped and examined a large bronze plaque that was hung on the wall.
"What are all those names up there?" he asked one of the ushers.
"Those are the names of people who died in the service." the usher
replied.
Curious, the boy asked the usher
- "which service, the 9:30 service or the 11 o'clock service?"
I am happy to report today that we are about,
what we are celebrating,
is a birth - not a death -
the birth of the church - the birth of Christ
in you and me - and in all who call on his name.
It is a significant day -
the day on which the first believers came alive in their faith,
the day when the Rock upon which Christ planted his church began to
support and uphold an incredible new life -
a life that has existed since the world began,
but which was poured out in a special fashion
and took on flesh in you and me
much as it took life in Jesus, the Son of Mary, the Son of God
so long ago.
Pentecost is an event the world has long been promised
and which the people of God have long awaited.
Pentecost is the reversal of what occurred at the Tower of Babel when,
because of our sinfulness,
we became unable to understand one another.

Last Sunday June 4th, after Sunday School, Father Gary hosted the Teacher Appreciation Luncheon at Finn MacCools.

The Curriculum that will be used for the upcoming new Sunday School year will be from Spark House.
The younger grades will journey through the Bible with captivating stories from the Old and New testaments.
The older grades will connect
Sunday
School and worship with the lessons that correspond to the Revised Common Lectionary. They will dive into the same Bible story that you will hear during the church service.
This curriculum is all about Bible discovery and exploration that is integrated into every program and lesson which is appropriate for any age group.

Sunday June 18th -- Happy Father's Day
The Last day of Sunday School will meet at
9:45 AM
in the
Parish Hall to practice the song that we will be singing at the beginning of the service.
Also at the beginning of the service, Father Gary will be blessing the "Toiletries for the Troops" before they are sent off to Afghanistan by "Boots on the Ground".

Congratulations To Our Graduating Crucifers & Acolytes
William Longmire
, son of John and Eva, has been an Acolyte since October 2009 and a Crucifer for the past few years. He is an Honor Roll student at Schreiber, and was a three-year member of Key Club, a school-based public service society. He is also Co-Captain of the Schreiber ice hockey team, and has been named to the Nassau County All-Star team (twice), as well as Countywide Goal tending MVP, Playoff MVP and All Star Game MVP.
William will be attending the Honors College at the University of Alabama, and studying business.
Jack Golder
, son of John and Rachel, has been an acolyte since October 2010. Jack likes to get creative in the kitchen and play video games, and for three years he has also worked every Saturday at Shields' Hardware Store.
Jack will be attending Brooklyn College in the fall, and plans to study film and marketing.
Colin Schroeder
, son of Greg and Robin, has been a member of St. Stephen's since birth. He has been active in the choir, youth group, as an altar server and youth member of the vestry. He has attended the Diocesan convention and the Episcopal Youth Event. Colin is graduating from Schreiber with honors. At school he was a four year varsity soccer goalie and involved in many music organizations.
This fall Colin will attend Bard College where he plans to major in environmental science, keep up his music and play soccer as a Bard Raptor. He has already met the college chaplain, who is the rector of the local Episcopal Church. Colin thanks his St. Stephen's family for all their support.
Zachary Lee
, son of Karen and the late Richard, is the Valedictorian of Great Neck North High School, where he is also President of the Tri-M Music Honor Society and of the Junior Players theater club. He is a National Merit Finalist, an Advanced Placement Scholar with Distinction, Long Island Scholar Artist,
as well as an All-National Singer, All-State Flutist, and Piano showcase alternate.
Zach will attend Yale University where he is looking forward to studying subjects from humanities to sciences, while continuing to perform, write and compose.

Come help us close the year on a high note! We start our Spring clearance next week, and will run a dollar sale on June 20, 22 and 24th.
We would like to welcome Sue Snyder to our merry band! Sue started on Saturday, and is our new part-time Sales Associate. A St. Mary's graduate originally from Manhasset, she lived in PA for many years and now has moved back. We welcome her energy and enthusiasm for our mission! Stop by and say Hi.

Announcements
St. Stephen's Capital Campaign 2017: We urgently need to replace our Rectory's roof! We need your help! There was a to-all communication sent via email and also by post, describing the projects and our need. To avoid depleting our modest endowment, we are embarking on a Capital Campaign 2017 and we ask all of our parishioners to prayerfully consider how much they can contribute to ensure that our Church and our physical plant have a solid foundation for our next era of growth. Please consider contributing during the month of June as the work begins! We have a goal of $60,000 which will cover the cost of the Rectory roof and related repairs; if we can exceed this goal there are many other necessary projects, so your generosity is greatly appreciated!

SAVE THE DATE! - Saturday, OCTOBER 21, 2017 for St. Stephen's Fall Fair: Due to conflicts of events, the Annual Fall Fair date had to be moved to Saturday October 21st, as elected by the Fair Committee under Fr. Gary's guidance. Please make a note of the new date. The Parish Hall will be open to accept donations starting on Tuesday, August 1st.

Medical Equipment Lending Closet: The Community Synagogue, 160 Middle Neck Rd in Port Washington, has a lending closet with medical equipment, free to members of the community. You do not need to be a member of the synagogue. If you have wheelchairs, walkers, canes, etc. that you no longer need but that others could use, or are in need of yourself, please call Annette Rosalia, the synagogue's office manager, at (516) 883-3144.
