Message from the Senior Warden
Like many of us, I suspect, I find myself overwhelmed these days by the seemingly endless reports of violence and hatred, and their aftermath-scores of men and women and children run over, gunned down or stabbed to death. But watching the news from Manchester, England a few days ago, I was also struck by the stories of courage and generosity and love that were stimulated by that tragedy-people bravely confronting the assailants and others coming
to the aid of the wounded, often literally saving their lives. As Michael Curry would likely say, "in the midst of the worst of tragedies, love wins." Our own Deer Isle also provides consistent evidence of this phenomenon. Fishermen pulling the traps of their ailing colleagues; the island pantry; spontaneous fundraisers to help neighbors in need, and countless other examples. I particularly remember a time a few years ago, when a young man working
on the bridge died in an accident. He lived a considerable distance away. When islanders learned that he had left a child and young mother behind,
they raised some $10,000 for their support.
Still, as the news from Manchester rolled over me, I found myself gloomily wondering why it seems to take a horrific event to reveal and elicit the best
in people. Why do we need these events to see and be moved by the nobility of our fellow human beings? But maybe that's where faith comes into play.
We can live our lives knowing and trying to live in to the idea that there is
love in our midst and that, even in the worst of circumstances, "love wins."

meditation and prayer.

Seminar on Finding Joy:
Edward Dufresne+ will lead a four-session seminar on the topic, "Finding Joy" at St. Brendan the Navigator following worship on Sundays beginning June 18, continuing August 13, and two additional Sundays still to be determined in September/October.
The main text for discussion will be The Book of Joy by the Dalai Lama and Archbishop Desmond Tutu, (Avery, New York, 2016). Topics will include: What Is Joy?, Joy and Suffering, Joy Comes with Perspective and Acceptance, Joy in Humility and Humor, The Joy in Forgiveness, Joy and Gratitude, Joy and Generosity, Joy and Compassion, Joy in Being One with the World, and Joy in Being One with God.

Scripture Notes for Trinity Sunday:
The First Sunday after Pentecost is a celebration of the Holy Trinity. This is
not, however,a celebration of a doctrine, but the celebration of the God whose self-revelation is as an interaction of love between Persons. The doctrine came about as the Christian attempt in human language to express our experience of God: an experience that we are God's children, we are the
brothers and sisters of God incarnate, and we are people who find the Spirit
of God living in us. Thus, the names given to God's action toward us and
God's own being are Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
The first account of creation is our reading from the Hebrew Scriptures.
While the original writers had no idea of God as the Holy Trinity, Christians
have noted that in the act of creating, God, God's Word, and the Spirit or Wind
of God are used as terms for God's action. In the New Testament reading,
we hear in its concluding Grace the earliest Christian formulary of the Trinity,
a passage familiar from the closing of Morning and Evening Prayer.
God is most clearly revealed as the Trinity of Persons in Unity of Being in
baptism. It is there that we are adopted as children, thus made brothers and sisters of God's Son, and filled with the Holy Spirit of God. As we celebrate the Eucharist, we find our lives as a community drawn into the community of love that we name the Holy Trinity.

In Our Prayers
We pray for those on our prayer list suffering and recovering from illnesses, especially Jan Place, William, Fred, Pat Stoneburner, Holly, Carolyn Angel, Colin MacNaught, Jim White, Shannon Cormier, Nancy Stearns, Daniel Harriman, Ingrid Bengis, Mary Adams, Diane, John, Tom, Claudice, Andy Nagle, Paul Burton, Jennifer Hulsey and her family Byron, Ben, and Clair. We pray, also, for those who love and care
for them.
We pray for those struggling with addiction and mental illness.
We pray for all those receiving care through Neighbor Care and for all
the residents of the Island Nursing Home, the Northern Bay Residential Facility, and their families.
We pray for the dying, and those who have died. We remember also
those who mourn.
We pray for the victims of gun violence-in our cities and towns, in our schools, in our places of worship, and in our homes.
We pray for the victims of the violence of armed conflicts around the world. We pray for those made refugees by the violence of armed
conflicts. We pray for the victims of terrorist attacks everywhere.
We pray for all who suffer the effects of domestic violence and the violence of bullying in our schools.
We pray for all peacemakers, and all those who work for justice.
We pray for all those serving in the armed forces of our country, remembering, especially, Craig, Chris, and Graham.
We pray for all who govern, and we pray for the concerns of our local community, remembering, especially, our children, our young people,
and our isolated elderly.
We pray for Justin, Archbishop of Canterbury; Suheil, Bishop of Jerusalem; Michael, our Presiding Bishop; Steve, our Bishop; for the members of our vestry; and for all our members, whose ministries are varied and far-reaching.
In the Diocesan Cycle of Prayer, we pray for
the summer chapel congregations of St. Philip's by the Sea, Fortunes Rocks and St. Martin's in the Field, Biddeford Pool.
For the mission and ministry of Camp Bishopswood, its staff and campers, in the 2017 season.
