Bearing One Another's Burdens

In one of the Apostle Paul's earliest letters to a fledgling church, he reminds the young Christians of the "fruit of the spirit" with which they are to live with each other and the world. "...Love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness gentleness and self-control..." (Galatians 5:22).  When one of them strays from the faith, suffers personal difficulty or is in any type of need, he urges them to, "Bear one another's burdens, in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ." (Galatians 6:2).

It's a charge to all members of the Body of Christ not just the leadership, not just the apostles.  All members of the church are to reach out and care for each other.

Throughout my ministry I've observed devoted church members who put such faith into action.  These are the loving folks who'll visit church members and friends when they are in the hospital, bring them over a meal when they get home, reach out to the struggling with an invitation for a cup of coffee or a compassionate listening ear.

Ordained clergy may have special training in counselling skill and experience in pastoral calling.  They have a specialized role to play in the church.   But we don't pay the preacher to do our compassion for us.  Every member of the church is charged to reach out to each other with care...."bearing one another's burdens".

COTW is blessed with many folks who live by this creed.  They do so not for recognition or reward but because it is in their hearts to do so.    I this way, they fulfill the law of Christ!
