May 29, 2017

Today is Memorial Day in the US, a day on which those who died in active military service are remembered. While this tradition began shortly after the US Civil War, it didn't become a federal holiday until 1971. (I enjoy  history, so I thought I'd share.)

Last week, I spent a lot of time thinking about storage, which is reflected in my articles this week. Between prepping for my Multicam webinar - in which the speed of our storage plays a crucial role - moderating a panel at the Creative Storage Conference, and the Digital Production Buzz devoting its entire show this week to storage, media, backups and archiving, I've been immersed in this subject.

My lead article reflects this: "What a Mess! The State of Storage Today."  There is so much going on, so much we need to learn, that I wrote an overview of what's happening in this article. I had fun writing it because every time I thought I was done, I discovered still more I needed to cover.

During our panel at Creative Storage, Tim Standing, from SoftRAID, told me about their newest software - SMART Alec - that monitors your hard disks and warns you if they are likely to fail. Though still in beta, this is an essential tool for all of us, you'll find the article below.

Thinking of last week's webinar on Multicam editing in Apple Final Cut Pro X, I created two excerpts for this week's newsletter: one on multichannel audio and the other on using multicam techniques to create a montage of stills. The full webinar is available for download from our store - as well as our Video Training Library. Plus, I added two new sections to the final version that I wasn't able to cover in the live events.

This week, my webinar shifts back to Adobe Premiere with a session for new users on creating simple effects. You'll find more details here and, as always, registration to our live events is FREE!

Also, two significant industry announcements last week:

* Apple updated Final Cut Pro X to version 10.3.4. This update fixed about three bugs. I've installed it on one of my systems and haven't had any problems - I also haven't had anyone write in reporting problems. Upgrading seems to be OK. Updates are free and you can download yours through the Mac App Store.

* Intel announced that it plans to integrate Thunderbolt 3 into future Intel CPUs as well as release the protocol spec to the industry. (Read their press release here.) This is good news to all of us that want more choice in higher-speed devices.

This week, I also have an interview with the co-founders of StratusCore - a Cloud-based company that is providing new ways for visual artists to create. Plus, a CineGear preview from the team at DoddleNEWS.

Until we chat again next week, edit well.
