Area Manager Candidates
Finalists for the three Area Manager positions were interviewed last week. Each person participated in three rounds, meeting with one or more current Regional Directors, members of the Redesign Implementation team and members of the national staff. Final reviews and reference checks will be conducted this week. We hope to introduce our new team members in the next newsletter due in late June/early July.
Third notices
If you have not yet paid your 2017 accreditation fees, you should have received a third notice in the last few days. Reminder: after June 30, a $125 late fee will be imposed. Please contact Tammy Davis or Zizi Krasteva if you have questions or need more information. 
Save the Date: Tuesday, October 17, 2017, for a Chaplaincy Leadership Summit!
The NACC is collaborating with its Strategic Partners in Chaplaincy (ACPE, APC, CASC, and NAJC) in preparing an important Leadership Summit on Tuesday, October 17, 2017. Dr. Christina Puchalski will be the keynote presenter, along with the presidents of these five chaplaincy associations. The program will provide an overview of the state of chaplaincy and our collaborative initiatives to advance the profession. Please plan on participating via live-stream. While the event will be held at the APC headquarters in Hoffman Estates near Chicago, this day program will be available to all through live streaming. So please hold the date! More details to follow in the coming weeks.
A Poem for Reflection
I imagine the niceties of the first couple of weeks of some summer units have begun to wear thin. At the same time, I'm sure some students are now carrying stories with them of the people with whom they have served that may begin to transform their lives. In light of the recent London attacks as well as so much more around the world, I offer the following for your reflection:
"Song of the Open Road, I" by Walt Whitman
 
Afoot and light-hearted I take to the open road,
Healthy, free, the world before me,
The long brown path before me leading wherever I choose.
 
Henceforth I ask not good-fortune, I myself am good-fortune,
Henceforth I whimper no more, postpone no more, need nothing,
Done with indoor complaints, libraries, querulous criticisms,
Strong and content I travel the open road.
 
The earth, that is sufficient,
I do not want the constellations any nearer,
I know they are very well where they are,
I know they suffice for those who belong to them.
 
(Still here I carry my old delicious burdens,
I carry them, men and women, I carry them with me wherever I go,
I swear it is impossible for me to get rid of them,
I am fill'd with them, and I will fill them in return.) 
Something extra
Sometime during my 8th year, my father took me into the yard and began to teach me how to mow our yard. When I reached high school, my best friend and I were mowing as many as 40 lawns a week (and pocketing enough cash for us both to buy our first cars shortly thereafter). As the summer heats up and the drone of lawnmower engines fill many neighborhoods, I offer the following: A Mission to Mow Lawns in All 50 States.

Dr. Ensign wrote the piece for the Journal of Medical Humanities in honor of Bob Young (who taught her about death and dying early in her career as a nurse) and for all hospital chaplains. Lovely thoughts here: My Ode to Hospital Chaplains.

*Martyrdom of Guru Arjan Dev Ji - Sikhism [Nanakshahi tradition]
The first Sikh martyr and the fifth guru, Arjan (1563 - 1606 C.E.) built the Harimandir (Temple of God) in the town of Amritsar with door facing all four directions, in order to emphasize that the Sikh way was open to all regardless of their socio-economic status.  He also compiled the Sikh scriptures known as the Guru Granth Sahib.

*Anniversary of Jamyang Khyentse Ch ökyi Lodrö - Buddhism [Tibetan tradition]
A celebration of the Tibetan lama (ca. 1893 - 1959) whose mastery of several lineages and insights have had a profound effect on numerous currently teaching lamas.
