Monthly Evening Program
|
|
Presented in partnership with St. Louis Association of Community Organizations (SLACO)
Tuesday, June 13, 5:30 - 7:30
Sustainability in the built environment is typically associated with reducing the environmental impact and increasing the resilience of materials and systems. However, there is additionally a social dimension to sustainability in the built environment, one that considers the impact that architecture, urban design, and development patterns can have in reinforcing segregation, disinvestment, and impoverishment.
SPEAKERS
Professor Olon Dotson will discuss the social dimension of sustainability, examining from an architectural perspective the extent of the distress and abandonment commonly found in the cores of American cities.
He will share how reflecting directly on these "fourth world conditions" as a product of the racialization of place can help the architecture and other development professions begin to tackle them productively.
Olon Dotson is the Associate Professor of Architecture at the Ball State University, College of Architecture and Planning. His
primary research interest and focus has been in the health, vitality, and quality of life in inner-city communities.
Professor Olon Doton will be joined by Sal Martinez, the current board president of the Community Builders Network and the executive director of North Newstead Association.
Mr. Martinez will present some of the latest development initiatives underway in the Near North neighborhoods of St. Louis
, including the new National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency facility and the implementation of the Near North Side Master Plan through a HUD Choice Neighborhoods grant.
Mr. Martinez has established himself as a force in the comprehensive revitalization of the St. Louis region from his work in the Vashon/Jeff-Vander-Lou Initiative and the St. Louis Housing Authority. Martinez has been recognized for his work and service by the St. Louis Argus Newspaper, Better Family Life, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Eastern Missouri just to name a few.

In-depth Seminar ENERGY STAR & Historic Preservation: Satisfying Both Standards in Residential Applications |
|
Thursday, June 8th, 3 - 5 pm
This seminar will explore a number of residential gut rehabs completed in St. Louis since 2007 that have achieved both ENERGY STAR certification and met Missouri Historic Preservation Standards.
The projects featured average a HERS rating of 50. The presenter will examine the elements that contribute to energy efficiency, thermal comfort, and human health in these projects, including geo-thermal systems and Energy Recovery Ventilation (ERV) systems. Additionally discussed will be the materials contributing to these projects' high performance and the consideration taken when selecting building elements such as windows, insulation, fans, fixtures, venting, and more.
SPEAKER
Patty Maher, Tiger Lily Development LLC
Patty Maher has been doing total rehabs in south St. Louis since 1983. After a BA in philosophy from MU, she attended Ranken Technical Institute for a 2 year carpentry program in the mid-70's. She was part of the St. Louis Solar Greenhouse group in the 70's in St. Louis. She later earned a Master's Degree in Religious Studies with an emphasis on feminist theology from Washington University. After years of cabinetry, carpentry, decks, and additions, her business evolved into total rehabs. She now incorporates green efficiency into historical preservation and has won several awards, including a 2014 St. Louis Landmarks Award 2013 Growing Green Award for renovation from the U.S. Green Building Council - Missouri Gateway Chapter. Patty runs Tiger Lily Development LLC, Clover Leaf Properties LLC - General Contractor, and Mermaid Properties.

The USGBC-Missouri Gateway is deeply disappointed in the administration's decision to withdraw from the Paris Agreement.
This decision makes our regional green building work even more urgent. For over 15 years, we've been educating on the importance of climate action and greenhouse gas emissions reduction, supporting building designers, building operators, and local governments to reduce their environmental impacts. We've been advocating for green building policies that conserve natural resources, reduce costs, and improve human health.
With urgency and resolve, we will continue this important work. As the national USGBC says in
their statement, "Today, our efforts continue unabated and with commitment and hope that's stronger than ever."
We hope you join us in our work to transform the built environment and speed our transition to a low carbon economy. Become a member, sign on to the 25×20 Energy Benchmarking Campaign, and start making a difference!

Benchmarking Jam
|
|
Presented in partnership with the St. Louis Green Business Challenge
Tuesday, June 27, 4:00 - 6:00 pm
We are excited to partner with the St. Louis Green Business Challenge to present a Benchmarking Jam!
Energy benchmarking is the process of measuring how much energy your building consumes, and comparing your energy performance to similar buildings. Benchmarking is the first step toward saving energy and money.
Volunteers will be on hand to help attendees use ENERGY STAR Portfolio Manager, an online, interactive energy management tool that allows you to measure and track your building's energy, water, and waste consumption, identify investment priorities, and verify improvements over time. All building types benefit from benchmarking and are encouraged to attend.
Building representatives should bring a laptop or tablet, some basic details about their building (see our website for the full list), and 12 months of energy usage and cost data. Buildings interested in benchmarking water and waste performance should bring 12 months of water and waste data.

October 17, 2017
From the Philosophical to the Spigot: A forum discussing water policies, use, access, and quality in the Mississippi River Basin.
Who owns water in the United States? Who determines its use? Who protects it? The answers to these questions are in some ways both everyone and no one.
And yet in a time of increased demand and growing climate instability, not just in the United States, but around the world, the answers--and the questions--are more important all the time.
Join us for a full day of presentations about what's happening in the Mississippi River Basin, from the headwaters to the delta, as we discuss water from a global to a local perspective --trying, along the way, to determine a better future for our most valuable resource.
