  Sunday, July 16, 2017

If you enjoy the movies....this is the group for you!
Once a month (late Sunday afternoon) we will venture to the Dedham Community Theater at 580 High Street to see a movie.  No need to RSVP, simply arrive for the movie and look for Reverend McCarley. Following the movie we will adjourn to a local eating establishment to reflect on the themes, acting, directing of the movie. Join us for lively discussion and entertainment that supports our local community!

ST. PAUL'S BOOK GROUP
WEDNESDAY, JULY 19TH at 7:00 P.M.
IN THE AIR-CONDITIONED RECTORY

In the spirit of a more relaxed summer--we're doing things a bit different during the warmer months.  During July and August meetings we will have one summer meeting on Wednesday July 19 at 7PM in the air conditioned rectory.  There will be no
meeting in August but we will meet after the July 19 meeting again in September.
Please choose from one of the following three books:

1)  The Paris Wife by Paula McLain

Chicago, 1920: Hadley Richardson is a quiet twenty-eight-year-old who has all but given up on love and happiness-until she meets Ernest Hemingway. Following a whirlwind courtship and wedding, the pair set sail for Paris, where they become the golden couple in a lively and volatile group-the fabled "Lost Generation"-that includes Gertrude Stein, Ezra Pound, and F. Scott Fitzgerald.

Though deeply in love, the Hemingways are ill prepared for the hard-drinking, fast-living, and free-loving life of Jazz Age Paris. As Ernest struggles to find the voice that will earn him a place in history and pours himself into the novel that will become  The Sun Also Rises,  Hadley strives to hold on to her sense of self as her roles as wife, friend, and muse become more challenging. Eventually they find themselves
facing the ultimate crisis of their marriage-a deception that will lead to the
unraveling of everything they've fought so hard for.

A heartbreaking portrayal of love and torn loyalty,  The Paris Wife  is all the more poignant because we know that, in the end, Hemingway wrote that he would rather have died than fallen in love with anyone but Hadley.

2 ) Sacre Bleu: A Comedy d'Art by Christopher Moore

Absolutely nothing is sacred to Christopher Moore. The
phenomenally popular,  New York Times  bestselling satirist whom the  Atlanta Journal-Constitution  calls, "Stephen King with a whoopee cushion and a double-espresso imagination" has already lampooned Shakespeare, San Francisco vampires,
marine biologists, Death...even Jesus Christ and Santa Claus! Now, in his latest masterpiece,  Sacré Bleu , the immortal Moore takes on the Great French Masters. A magnificent "Comedy d'Art" from the author of  Lamb Fool , and  Bite Me , Moore's  Sacré Bleu  is part mystery, part history (sort of), part love story, and wholly hilarious as it follows a young baker-painter as he joins the dapper  Henri Toulouse-Lautrec on a quest to unravel the
mystery behind the supposed "suicide" of Vincent van Gogh.

3) Americanah by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie

Ifemelu and Obinze are young and in love when they depart
military-ruled Nigeria for the West. Beautiful, self-assured Ifemelu heads for America, where despite her academic success, she is forced to grapple with what it means to be black for the first time. Quiet, thoughtful Obinze had hoped to join her, but with post-9/11 America closed to him, he instead plunges into a dangerous, undocumented life in London. Fifteen years later, they reunite in a newly democratic Nigeria, and reignite their passion-for each other and for their homeland.

Each book will be discussed at our next meeting so pick the one that appeals to you.

The Blue Bunny can order these for you if you call and ask.
With three books, we didn't want them to order too many of any copies but please still support our local bookstore.

Happy summer reading!

IT'S TIME TO UPDATE THE PARISH DIRECTORY!!

Dear Parishioners,

This summer we plan to publish an updated directory for all members of the church. If you have access to our most recent 2015/16 directory please review and make sure the contact information is correct. Or if you simply know that your contact info has changed in any way over the last two years, please just send Melissa and an email with the correct information.

Also, we do like to remember parishioners' birthdays and anniversaries, so if you haven't yet provided those dates, please do so at your earliest convenience.

Melissa's e-mail address is [email protected]

I hope you are  all enjoying a pleasant Spring (despite the weather) and I look forward to seeing you soon. Also many thanks for the help on the updated information.

Many thanks again,

Peter

WE'RE IN SEARCH OF MUSICIANS...

Summer is coming-and our Choir is taking a well-deserved break.

This is a wonderful time for us to summon talent from our pews. If you, or your child, play an instrument or sing, David Tierney, our Minister of Music, would be delighted to hear from you. This is an opportunity for us to share our gifts with one another-and, for the younger members of our congregation, to have an opportunity to play music or sing before a supportive and appreciative gathering of worshipers. Please let David know if you would like to help us out during the warmer months. David can be reached at [email protected] .

ST PAUL'S SOUND SYSTEM UPDATE

LET ALL WHO HAVE EARS.....
Sound Hearing Clipart #1
As we update our sound system, we're on the lookout for a team of folks (to be placed on a rotating schedule) who, during the 10:00 a.m. service, would be willing to take charge of an ipad which can easily adjust the volume levels of various microphones in the church.  This is very easy to do.  (Melanie, who is rather technically inept--finds it simple).  For example, if you are in charge of the ipad and are having difficulty hearing the person reading the lessons, you would simply turn the volume up.  We will be providing training for those who volunteer.  Please call the Parish Office at 781-326-4553 if you are available.

THE BARBARA C HARRIS CAMP

The Barbara C. Harris Camp (The Camp for the Episcopal Diocese of Massachusetts) has a full scholarship guaranteed for a new (first-time) camper , as well as plenty of additional funds to help churches and families cover their the cost of the camp.  If you are interested in learning more.  The website for the camp is BCHcenter.org.
