A warm day to start out our June bird walks. June is one of my favorite birding months because of all the song and activity around nesting. Usually hidden birds like song sparrows, chats, and towhees are out singing and announcing territory right now. In another 8 or 10 weeks you'll hear them, but good luck seeing them.

the foothills. One of the most reliable pockets is up Skunk Canyon near where it connects with South Mesa Trail. Listen for the loud, clear calls of 'teacher, teacher, teacher'. The ovenbird gets its name because of the brick oven-shaped nests it builds on the ground.
