STANWOOD – Walk with Mayor Kelley

Do you like to walk in the morning?  Are you looking for an opportunity to speak with Mayor Kelley about issues affecting the Stanwood community? Mayor Kelley invites community members to join him for a leisurely morning walk as you explore the beautiful City of Stanwood every Wednesday at 7:30 a.m., from June 7, 2017 through August 30, 2017.  Share your thoughts and discuss issues affecting the community. Walks will start at Rite Aid located at 26817 88th Ave NW, and will go approximately one mile to City Hall at 10220 270th Street NW, then back to Rite Aid.  Join Mayor Kelley for all or part of the walk.

The Mayor may not be able to attend every Wednesday throughout the summer due to other commitments.  On those days senior city staff members will lead the walks.

For more information about Walk with the Mayor contact Deputy Clerk, Erica Schorn

STANWOOD –Guide the Future of Stanwood Parks and Trails

Do you care about Stanwood parks and trails?  Do you have ideas about how to improve the city’s parks?  The City of Stanwood Parks and Trails Advisory Committee is holding an open house to take public input on proposed park and trail improvements, priorities and funding alternatives on Monday, June 12, 2017 from 4:00pm until 6:00pm at City Hall located at 10220 270th Street NW in Stanwood.

The City of Stanwood formed a Parks and Trails Advisory Committee in November 2016.  The committee has been meeting monthly to prioritize projects in the city’s parks and trails plans. The committee has identified and prioritized improvements at city parks and trails including improving the ball fields and completing the loop trail at Heritage Park; installing a new playground at Church Creek Park; constructing a boat launch at Hamilton Landing; and rebuilding the heritage barn at Ovenell Farm.

There is a $6.3 million dollar funding gap between the city’s available revenues and prioritized park improvements. The committee has developed several funding strategies to close the gap. One strategy is to form a voter approved metropolitan park district (MPD). An MPD is a separate taxing district that would support both needed improvements and on-going maintenance. The open house will provide information on funding alternatives including the size of the district, the level of funding and impacts to property owners. The open house will provide an opportunity for community members to weigh-in before the committee makes a recommendation to the city council for consideration at a special council workshop on Thursday, June 29, 2017

For more information, visit the city’s website at www.ci.stanwood.wa.us/parksrec/page/parks-and-trails-advisory-committee or call Carly Ruacho, Public Works Planner at 360-629-2181.

City of Stanwood - The city is working with a company called “CGI Communications” to update the city’s promotional video.  CGI prepares a promotion video at no cost to the city.

A videographer will be in Stanwood in August to film.  There is no obligation for businesses to advertise or participate in the program.  The city will receive a video regardless of any business community participation.  See the attached links for more information.

Orcas of Puget Sound

Learn about Orcas, a.k.a. killer whales, Wednesday, June 21, 7 p.m. at the Camano Multipurpose Center, 141 N East Camano Drive. Cindy Hansen, Education and Events Coordinator with Orca Network, will discuss the biology, social structure, culture, and endangered status of Puget Sound's southern residents. Orcas are one of the most studied and adored cetacean species. From Namu to Free Willy to Blackfish, they have inspired and fueled the imagination of children and adults worldwide. Southern resident orcas were listed as an endangered species in 2005, yet after a decade of efforts they are not recovering. They were recently recognized by NOAA as one of the eight U.S. species most likely to become extinct in the near future. Their fate is strongly linked with that of their primary prey, Chinook salmon, also an endangered species. The Camano Wildlife Habitat Project, sponsored by Friends of Camano Island Parks, hosts public presentations the third Wednesday of the month.
