Message from the Senior Warden
On July 30th, just a touch over a month from now, we will be holding our annual meeting, beginning immediately after the service. A good part of
the meeting will be devoted to doing some visioning focused on the challenges we all face as a community and an exploration of some of the ways to address them. We will be assisted and led in this effort by Edward Dufresne, who will also be presiding that Sunday.
In addition, we will be electing a new vestry including two new wardens,
a treasurer and a clerk. It is critical that all of us be willing to provide this service to our community. So, please let your interest be known to a member of the Nominating Committee, which presently includes Anne Burton, Peter Tarlton, Skip Greenlaw and me. And in any event, I hope
and trust that you will all be receptive to requests from the Committee.
So, in the month ahead, especially, let us all keep in mind our church community and how we might serve it.

Mortgage Paid Off!
In 2009 Saint Brendan's committed to buying our beautiful and historic church building, previously having been tenants for our entire Stonington church life. The fundraising began with a wonderful gift in memory of Paul and Anne van Buren, and continued with two capital campaigns raising over a million dollars.
Despite the enormous giving, we needed a mortgage of $137,000 to cross the finish line on the parish hall construction.
By 2016 gifts to the capital campaign and monthly payments reduced that debt to $90,000.
A parishioner worked with donors to pay off $45,000 in June 2016 and received commitments
to pay off the remaining mortgage in full in June 2017.
Indeed, it was with great pleasure and gratitude that I delivered final payments, over $40,000 to Bar Harbor Bank earlier this month.
I am certain that if you reviewed the security camera footage,
I did a victory lap or two.
The monthly mortgage payment of $615 is gone!
This is over $7,000 a year that does not have to be budgeted for.
So here's to the anonymous team!

Scholarships Awarded
Jordyn Judkins, Deer Isle Stonington High School, and Liza Moore,
George Stevens Academy, were recipients of the 2017 St. Brendan's
$1,000 scholarships for graduating seniors.
Jordyn, class valedictorian, served both her school and community
volunteering in numerous activities from early childhood health fairs to
the Island Food Pantry. She was active in the band as a flute and
saxophone player and participated in varsity tennis grades 9-12 receiving
many awards. Jordyn plans to attend the University of Maine pursuing an
engineering degree. In her application essay she says, "I want to
become an engineer as I want to give back to the community that
taught me so much."
Liza has chosen to attend the College of the Atlantic in environmental science. As a student at George Stevens she served as president of the cultural club and has traveled to Guatemala and Brazil working on community service projects. She has volunteered at H.O.M.E. And says, "Through H.O.M.E. I have felt part of the community that has helped raise me." Her dream for her future is to use her higher education to help
people in need.
The Outreach Committee of St. Brendan's established the scholarship criteria, formed a committee to read the applications, and allocated the funds from the outreach budget.

Worship Committee Report
The Worship committee met June 14th and made several changes regarding parish volunteers participating in our services:
First, the responsibility of crucifer will be rotated among the list of lay volunteers who have signed up for Sunday services. As in the past,
children and/or visiting grandchildren are invited (and encouraged) to
take part in the service as well.
The worship committee determined the crucifer should also be responsible for the plate collection and bringing the offering to the altar. Greeters -
who are not in the choir - will be responsible for bringing the bread and wine to the altar.
To recognize special life events during a Sunday service - such as birthdays and anniversaries - the committee decided to have special prayers offered at the altar the first Sunday of each month for those who wish to be recognized, and it would be noted in that Sunday's bulletin.

Vesta Kowalski will be joining the Committee at its next meeting on July 2nd, after the service.

Scripture Notes for Third Sunday After Pentecost:
Last Sunday we heard Jesus give instructions to his twelve disciples as
he prepared to send them out to proclaim the gospel. Today that passage
continues with his warning to them that they will encounter opposition
to the message and even may have to suffer for it.
The first reading continues the story of Abraham and Sarah. Before the
child promised them was born, they decided to help God out by Abraham
getting a son by the slave girl, Hagar. However, once Isaac was born
Sarah demanded that Hagar and their son be sent away. God cared for
them, however, and Ishmael became the ancestor of the Arabs, as Isaac
was the ancestor of the people of Israel.
In the second reading, Paul sets forth the meaning of baptism. It is nothing
less than a participation in the death and resurrection of Jesus. The terms
used here in the original Greek mean that we have already died with him in
baptism and are in the process of being raised with him into the resurrection
life. Thus, our old identity is gone and our new identity is as members of
Christ's Body.
We gather to respond to the same call that was made to the apostles and
to Abraham. It is not always easy to be follower of Christ. However, we find that God's grace is always available in Word and Sacraments. We are upheld
in the experience of those who have gone before us and above all by the example of Jesus dying and rising in our midst.

In Our Prayers
We pray for those on our prayer list suffering and recovering from illnesses, especially Jan Place, William, Fred, Pat Stoneburner, Holly, Carolyn Angel, Sidney, Colin MacNaught, Jim White, Shannon Cormier, Nancy Stearns, Daniel Harriman, Ingrid Bengis, Mary Adams, Diane, John, Tom, Claudice, Andy Nagle, Paul Burton, Jennifer Hulsey and her family Byron, Ben, and Clair. We pray, also, for those who love and care
for them.
We pray for those struggling with addiction and mental illness.
We pray for all those receiving care through Neighbor Care and for all
the residents of the Island Nursing Home, the Northern Bay Residential Facility, and their families.
We pray for the dying, and those who have died. We remember also
those who mourn.
We pray for the victims of gun violence-in our cities and towns, in our schools, in our places of worship, and in our homes.
We pray for the victims of the violence of armed conflicts around the world. We pray for those made refugees by the violence of armed
conflicts. We pray for the victims of terrorist attacks everywhere.
We pray for all who suffer the effects of domestic violence and the violence of bullying in our schools.
We pray for all peacemakers, and all those who work for justice.
We pray for all those serving in the armed forces of our country, remembering, especially, Craig, Chris, and Graham.
We pray for all who govern, and we pray for the concerns of our local community, remembering, especially, our children, our young people,
and our isolated elderly.
We pray for Justin, Archbishop of Canterbury; Suheil, Bishop of Jerusalem; Michael, our Presiding Bishop; Steve, our Bishop; for the members of our vestry; and for all our members, whose ministries are varied and far-reaching.
In the Diocesan Cycle of Prayer, we pray for
the summer chapel congregations of
St. James', Prout's Neck and Holy Trinity, Peaks Island.
For those who suffer persecution, oppression and denial of human rights.
In the Anglican Cycle of Prayer

we pray for
