'Every Other Hour' Examines Gun Violence in Chicago

Chicago's gun violence claims a victim every other hour, on average. The relentless bloodshed has taken hundreds of lives and damaged thousands more, and it's changing the life of the city. Beginning next week, All Things Considered will expose listeners to a special reporting project by WBEZ in Chicago. With interviews of young shooters, victims, law enforcement, and moms taking to the streets to find solutions, the project also seeks out experts and investigates institutional issues to build a better understanding of the complex web of cause and effect.

KGOU 2017 Fiscal Year End Approaches

KGOU is nearing the end of the 2017 fiscal year June 30. We're paying bills, double-checking our numbers, and will be diving in to do all the accounting work that must be done in preparation for our annual audit.

Even though KGOU was faced with significant cuts in state funding to higher education institutions, private support increased for the year. Listeners truly did come through for KGOU, allowing current service levels to remain intact. Stay tuned for specifics as we finalize our FY17 figures -- and if you haven't given yet this year, make your donation now to support KGOU's public service.
4th of July Holiday Programs Sizzle and Pop
The Capitol Steps
Your Independence Day is not complete without celebrating all that makes our nation great -- and mocking that which is still a work in progress. The Capitol Steps' searing satire skewers the newsmakers in the headlines, kicking off the holiday programs at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, July 4.

A celebration of America in music comes next at 7 p.m. with A Capitol 4th, live from the west lawn of the US Capitol. Iconic performers The Blues Brothers, The Beach Boys, and The Four Tops headline a star-studded holiday tribute. Then at 9 p.m., KGOU listeners can kick back with highlights from Jazz in June 2017, an eclectic soundtrack for fireworks-viewing.

Jazz Night in America Video: Still Dreaming

From the mid-'70s to the mid-'80s, members of jazz combo Old and New Dreams -- Dewey Redman on tenor sax, Charlie Haden on bass, plus Don Cherry on trumpet and Ed Blackwell on drums -- paid homage of a sort to the soulful acoustic sound refined by Ornette Coleman, in whose band they had all previously played. Saxophonist and composer Joshua Redman -- Dewey's son -- decided that he would do something similar for his generation. He has assembled a group of younger musicians, named Still Dreaming as a nod to Old and New Dreams. Jazz Night in America brings us their story and music in this week's video extra.

Ron and Ernie Isley join forces with Carlos and Cindy Blackman Santana on a once-in-a-lifetime collaboration album, Power of Peace, to be released next week by Legacy Recordings, a division of Sony Music Entertainment. Two families of Rock & Roll Hall of Famers celebrate the timeless sounds of Funk, Soul, Blues, Rock, Jazz and Pop on a diverse mix of hand picked classic songs. KGOU will hold a random drawing to give away copies on CD, courtesy of the record label.
