Spotlight On: The Alliance for Wisconsin Youth
|

"We're excited about our efforts to help young people live healthy, drug- and alcohol-free lives," said Kari Lerch, Deputy Director of the Community Advocates Public Policy Institute. "We're doing just that by building the capacity of local coalitions aimed at supporting the next generation of prevention leaders."
AWY, like the many other prevention-focused coalitions PPI participates in, focuses on stopping a negative situation from ever taking place, and therefore such approaches are often highly cost-effective and better for individuals at risk of developing a substance use issue. After all, if we can deter one person from ever using harmful substances in the first place, we will prevent that individual from becoming addicted to them and potentially risking their lives and wellbeing, damaging their relationships, and tearing at the fabric of our communities.
The Community Advocates Public Policy Institute administers the AWY Southeast Region, which includes the counties of Jefferson, Kenosha, Milwaukee, Ozaukee, Racine, Walworth, Washington, and Kenosha -- and it's very active.
In April, members of the
Milwaukee County Substance Abuse Prevention Coalition (MCSAP)
attended an AWY Youth Summit in East Troy to learn more about the importance of preventing drug, tobacco, and alcohol use among youth. Members committed to working on outreach efforts, including a sticker shock campaign, a public service announcement, and social media messages to support prevention.
"I'm confident that these young leaders will have a positive impact on their schools and neighborhoods," Lerch said.
The Youth Summit was directed by the training agency
Leading to Change
, which encouraged attendees to build their leadership skills and find unique ways to work together. You can see just how much fun the group had in this Leading to Change-produced video of the summit.

#TobaccoFreePride Launches
The Alliance also hosted a table in the Health and Wellness area of PrideFest Milwaukee, which created three nonsmoking areas for nonsmokers, ex-smokers, and those trying to quit. Anneke Mohr, the Alliance's coordinator, notes that the LGBTQ community smokes at roughly twice the rate of the general public due to tobacco industry targeting, coping with discrimination, and social spaces that provide easy access to tobacco.
And the habit starts quite young.
In Wisconsin, three times as many LGB+ youth smoked before their 13th birthday compared to heterosexual youth. The disparity continues through adulthood. We encourage you to tell your quit story on social media via

"Don't Fall for the Lean"
H2O teamed up with
Safe & Sound
to create
"Don't Fall for the Lean"
to address the dangers of drinking Lean, a street cocktail made from prescription cough syrup (codeine or promethazine) mixed with soda and candy. They worked with Lad Lake Synergy High School students to create a message about the drug and how becoming an addict can destroy your life. The video highlights their tremendous talent and dedication to spreading the word about the dangers of Lean. Check it out and share it widely.

Pulling Together for Peace and Solutions

53206 Drug-Free Communities Project is partnering with
Safe & Sound to host Pulling Together for Peace & Solutions. This will be a follow up to the Pulling Together for Peace in December 2016. In addition to a Town Hall for attendees, the event will include breakout sessions and resources about housing, employment, health, and safety. Food will be served and childcare will be provided.

Juneteenth Day Celebration

top by the Youth Voice Stage at this year's Juneteenth Celebration, where you'll hear some of Milwaukee's brightest talent perform, beginning at noon. Join Running Rebels, Dreamchasers, Wisconsin Community Services, and Safe & Sound from 1 to 4 p.m., when the Youth Voice Stage will feature a dunk exhibition, basketball clinic, dad/daughter two-ball, mother-son two-ball, hip-hop and singing, poetry and spoken word, music by DJ RC, and free food until it's gone. PHAT: Promoting Health Among Teens
July 11-August 10
The Promoting Health Among Teens (PHAT) program teaches youth ages 11-17 about puberty, sexually transmitted diseases, pregnancy prevention, and making healthy choices, all with a strong emphasis on abstinence. Sessions will be held every Tuesday and Thursday, 1 to 3 p.m., from Tuesday, July 11, through Thursday, August 10. Location: Milwaukee Christian Center, 807 S. 14th St., Milwaukee, WI 53204. On Friday, June 27, a host of community organizations will sponsor Amani Community Days from 3 to 5 p.m. Meet on the corner of 27th Street and Auer Avenue to learn about vital resources and summer programs, eat good food, and have fun.
In addition, the resident-led
Amani United's monthly meeting will take place on Tuesday, June 27, from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., at the COA Goldin Center Library, 2320 W. Burleigh St.

How Do We Address the Rising Violence in Milwaukee?
The
Community Coalition 4 Quality Policing (CC4QP) and NAACP are offering two events featuring Michael Scott, Director of the Center for Problem-Oriented Policing and Clinical Professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison Law School. At 12:15 p.m. on Monday, June 26, Scott will be interviewed by Mike Gousha as part of his "On the Issues" series at Marquette University Law School.

MCC's YouthBuild program is seeking an ambitious, service-minded person to be a Classroom Assistant AmeriCorps Member for the upcoming term (9/06/2017 to 8/31/2018). Duties include: tutor members who are working towards GED completion; assist members in their college and career exploration; coordinate community service and volunteer projects; Work with a team of two other full-time AmeriCorps members, 20 part-time AmeriCorps members, and six program staff.
