MCHS Drama/Tech Wins Top Honors at the Jerry Herman Awards!
Best Production and Best Orchestra!

Congratulations to Mira Costa Drama/Tech for winning Best Production and Best Orchestra at the Jerry Herman Awards show at the Pantages Theatre on Monday, June 5th, and to Robert Diehl for making it to the finals in the Best Actor category.
The Jerry Herman Awards is a celebration of achievement and excellence in high school musical theatre in Los Angeles.  Following adjudication by Jerry Herman judges this spring, Mira Costa's Oklahoma! was nominated for awards in multiple categories:

Best Scenic Design
Best Lighting Design
Best Costume Design
Best Orchestra
Best Ensemble
Best Musical Direction
Best Technical Crew
Sabrina Harris - Best Supporting Actress
Best Production

Receiving a nomination from the Jerry Herman Awards is one of the highest honors that can be achieved in high school musical theatre, with thousands of high school students in competition within the Los Angeles area.

At the show, Robert Diehl and Isabel Gray performed in the opening number with other Best Actor and Best Actress nominees, and the entire cast of Oklahoma! performed a scene from the musical.  Mira Costa was one of only three schools selected out of 57 in competition to perform a scene from their school's production.

Congratulations to the wonderfully talented Drama/Tech team for all their nominations and awards, and for making Oklahoma! such a spectacular hit!  Bravo to all!!!

Costa Varsity Baseball Season ends after great run to CIF Quaterfinals!

Junior left fielder Nathan Nykaza stretches out to catch a fly ball.

The MCHS Varsity Baseball season finally came to an end after a deep run into the CIF Southern Playoffs.  The Mustangs lost to the Capistrano Valley Cougars 1-0 which ended the season for the Mustangs at 24-8.  The Mustangs, who were the Co-Bay League Champions and made it all the way to the quarter finals of the CIF Southern division, started Christian Bodlovich on the hill who pitched his way to a stellar performance with 6 strike outs and one walk, but gave up a solo home as the first hit of the game in the bottom of the 5th.

Chase Meidroth went 3-3, but the Mustangs struggled to get much output from the rest of the team.  An unfortunate play, which saw one grounder by Meidroth hit the third base official causing Meidroth to hold at first instead of possibly a ground ball double, stymied the Mustangs offense who were unable to get anyone across home plate.

MCHS Bands finish season with
Pops and Jazz Concerts

The MCHS Bands ended their year on a high note with two fantastic concerts. The first was our annual Pops Concert on May 31. The audience was delighted by selections from James Bond movies, Disney films, Star Wars and a beautiful selection from the movie "Spirited Away". We said goodbye to our 49 seniors who will be graduating this year.

On June 2 our Jazz 1 and Jazz 2 bands played to a packed house in the Small Theatre. Jazz 1 played selections including "Have You Heard"  and "Not To Be Forgotten" by Pat Methany as well as "Sweet Georgia Upside Down"-- giving us a taste of the award winning sound that won them acclaim at the Berklee College of Music Jazz Festival in the spring.

We celebrate our year in music with the Band Banquet on June 11 and then start all over again by holding drum major and leadership tryouts this week and starting summer marching practices every Thursday evening in June and July. We are already planning our Fall Marching Season and have a fantastic field show planned-- details to be revealed soon!

Drama and Tech Updates

Senior Scenes Was a Hit!
A great time was had by all on Wed., May 31st, as Mira Costa's drama/tech students presented Senior Scenes, a series of short scenes produced and directed by graduating 12th grade drama students.  In the weeks leading up to the show, the Seniors auditioned, cast, and directed fellow classmates in their scenes from plays and musicals as their final class project.  A number of students also wrote their own original scenes for the show, which featured both humorous and dramatic performances.  Congratulations to the Senior directors for putting together an amazing array of scenes, to the awesome student tech crew for their outstanding technical support, and to the tremendously talented student actors who brought Senior Scenes to life!

Comedy Sportz News

On May 26th, Mira Costa's ComedySportz team participated in a hilarious
competition between the "Bros" and the "Ladies" in a wacky, gender-bending match. Following an early runaway lead by the Bros, the Ladies came from behind in a last minute turnaround to win the match 30 to 28.
Congrats to all the members of the ComedySportz team for an awesome and hysterically funny performance!

On Friday, June 9th, at 7 pm, come watch as Costa's Senior ComedySportz students face off against alumni in the final match of the year. Join us for a hilarious blast from the past as previous students go head to head against graduating players.  The match will be held in the Small Theatre. Tickets $5 at the door.

4th Grader Visits Drama/Tech
On Friday, May 2nd, Mira Costa's Oklahoma! cast and crew had a visit from Rosie Mayzlin, a 4th grader at Meadows, who was inspired by seeing the spring show and created a working diorama of the stage, complete with lighting and puppets. Oklahoma! directors and students were able to view the diorama and had a chance to speak with Rosie about what it's like to be a part of Costa's drama/tech team. Rosie also had the opportunity to perform the song "Oklahoma!" on stage with the cast.  Thank you to Rosie for bringing her miniature stage to Costa and sharing her excitement about theatre, and thank you, as well, to our talented young drama and tech students for inspiring children who will follow them to pursue their love for the dramatic arts.

Mira Costa Orchestra finishes the year with successful POPS Concert!

It's been a great year for orchestra and we are excited for our graduating seniors, ready to embark on a new stage in their lives.
We wish them the best of luck!

This past Monday, June 5th, was MCHS's Orchestra's final concert of the year--POPS Concert. This concert was a mix of both contemporary and classical pieces chosen with the audience in mind. The music featured favorites from film and television such as Game of Thrones, Raiders of the Lost Ark, and LaLa Land, as well as hit songs by Adele, Bruno Mars, , Disney classics, the Eagles and a world premiere composed by one of our very own students. Also featured was George Gershwin's iconic masterpiece, An American In Paris!
