Pentecost no bkgrnd

June 22, 2017   Emmanuel's E-News
Greetings from
Emmanuel Episcopal Church!

This Sunday is the Third Sunday after Pentecost.

Rev. Ellen will celebrate and Deacon Bill will preach.

We look forward to seeing you in church!

The Liturgy on the Sundays after Pentecost

The liturgy changes in an important way after the Day of Pentecost. Rather than taking place within specific seasons, each with its own theme, this period does not have one overall theme. Each Sunday takes its theme from the Gospel reading for that day and from the biblical and liturgical meaning of Sunday as the Lord's Day.

The most notable feature of this period is that we finish reading substantially all of one Gospel each year, having begun this in Advent and Epiphany. The three-year lectionary appoints one of the three "synoptic" Gospels-Matthew, Mark, and Luke-for each year.

John's Gospel is used throughout the three years for certain Holy Days, Lent, and Easter, and in filling out the Gospel of Mark, which is considerably shorter than the others, in Year B. We also read several of the epistles each year during this period. Finally, the Old Testament readings are chosen to complement the Gospel reading each Sunday. Most often they are events or prophecies which point to the work of Christ in the Gospel passage they accompany.

Summer Coffee Hour-
Thank You!

Thank you for helping with coffee hour over the summer months- we have filled all spots except one! We still would like coverage for July 30th at 8am.

Actually it's more refreshments than coffee- during the summer it's customary to just have lemonade and some goodies after the service.

If you are willing to host please either call the office (708) 352 1275, or use the sign-up sheet still at the back of the church. The office will send a reminder for each family that signed up.

Thank you!

Saint of the Week:

Alban, First Martyr of Britain
22 June 304)

There were probably Christians in the British Isles already in the first century. However, Alban is the first recorded Christian martyr. The traditional date of his death is 304, during the persecution under the Emperor Diocletian; but many scholars now date it as around 209, during the persecution under the Emperor Septimius Severus.

Alban was a pagan, and a soldier in the Roman Army. He gave shelter to a Christian priest who was fleeing from arrest, and in the next few days the two talked at length, and Alban became a Christian. When officers came in search of the priest, Alban met them, dressed in the priest's cloak, and they mistook him for the priest and arrested him. He refused to renounce his new faith, and was beheaded. He thus became the first Christian martyr in Britain.

The second martyr was the executioner who was to kill him, but who heard his testimony and was so impressed that he became a Christian on the spot, and refused to kill Alban. The third was the priest, who when he learned that Alban had been arrested in his place, hurried to the court in the hope of saving Alban by turning himself in. The place of their deaths is near the site of St. Alban's Cathedral today.

"SIX LITTLE STORIES"
- well worth the 30 seconds to read.

{1}  Once all the villagers decided to pray for rain. On the day of prayer all the people gathered, but only one boy came with an umbrella. That's FAITH.

{2}  When you throw babies in the air, they laugh because they know you will catch them. That's TRUST.

{3}  Every night we go to bed without any assurance of being alive the next morning, but still we set the alarms to wake up.  That's HOPE.

(4}  We plan big things for tomorrow in spite of zero knowledge of the future.  That's CONFIDENCE.

{5}  We see the world suffering, but still we get married and have children.  That's LOVE.

{6}  On an old man's shirt was written a sentence  'I am not 82 years old; I am sweet 16 with 66 years of experience.'  That's ATTITUDE.
