MoDOT director attends transportation event in Washington, D.C.

The White House issued additional information about what it wants to see in a new infrastructure investment package, as President Donald Trump, Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao and other officials took part in a weeklong series of events focused on this major domestic policy goal.
MoDOT Director Patrick McKenna, along with several other state transportation directors, attended the event to give their viewpoints to help define President Trump's transportation agenda.
MoDOT works with planning partners to create transportation facilities that work for all users because we value bicycle and pedestrian travel.
Accommodating for bicyclists or pedestrians may be as simple as providing a well-designed road that has room for all road users to share or as complex as a separate-grade structure, such as on a bridge.
Developing appropriate facility design for non-motorists depends on a variety of geometric and operational factors that are inter-related, such as available right-of-way, projected traffic counts and adjacent roadway design speeds.
We strive to integrate non-motorized travel into the existing system to provide connections where none exist to promote efficiency and to focus on a primary concern-the safety of those who depend on walking or bicycling to reach their destinations.

June 19 through 25 is National Pollinator Week. Pollinators, like bees and butterflies, are responsible for pollinating over 75 percent of our flowering plants and nearly 75 percent of our crops.

There is increasing evidence that many pollinators are in decline. However, there are some simple things you can do at home to encourage pollinator diversity and abundance.
Plant a pollinator garden
Provide nesting sites
Avoid or limit pesticide use
Did you know that Missouri is part of the Monarch Highway for monarch butterfly migration from Mexico to Canada? MoDOT has a role in the protection of pollinators because our roadsides provide habitat for not only monarchs traveling through Missouri, but other species of pollinators as well. Missouri maintains eight Welcome Center's, 14 Rest Areas, and 23 Truck-Only Parking sites across the state. Located on seven different Interstates, the facilities feature a variety of easy-to-access amenities to serve travelers.
According to a USDOT report, more than 94 percent of rail crossing incidents are caused by risky driver behavior. Since 2005, 70 people died in highway/rail crossing crashes in Missouri.
