Good Morning

We are working our way through John this summer. It's been terrific so far, at least that's what it's doing for me.  There is nothing as rich and meaningful as moving slowly through a Gospel.

Last week we heard about a religious man who thought he had it all figured out, and then Jesus blew up just about everything he believed. The warning in that story is to hold onto your beliefs loosely because sometimes our beliefs get in the way of knowing God, and especially in how we treat other people.

This weekend I am going to talk about a woman who had been married 5 times and was living with another man. I fully expect that what I am going to share with you is going to really surprise you. I'm hoping that some new light I'm going to shed on an old story is going to make the Bible come alive. It's going to be fantastic, and I'm pretty fired up. That's what the Holy Spirit does to an excitable fellow like me. The coffee and the running helps too.

So, I promise it will be worth it to be here this weekend, and to bring someone with you. But this morning, I want to share with you a little transition story, John 3:22-36, John stuck between these other stories. The disciples of John the Baptist are upset because he's drawing smaller crowds than Jesus. Everyone is going out to see Jesus instead of John. They are worried about their shrinking base of support.  John's response is a classic and good reminder to us. He says that he is happy to see Jesus succeed, that he is drawing bigger crowds. "He must become greater and I must become less. My job is to point you to him.  He comes from God and has an unlimited supply of the Spirit. He gives the gift of eternal life." Yohoo! I love it! He's got what you need. In abundance. Bucketful's. Overflowing. It's all about him. This Sunday I am praying that Spirit will lift you as I preach You'd Better Look Again from John 4:1-42.

See you Sunday, David
