Joys & Sorrows
Let Us Keep You In Our Thoughts and Prayers
Please join us in wishing Betty Miller, long time member of our church, a Happy 90th Birthday!

The family of Audrey Gundlach, who died on June 1 at age 89, would like to remind all of us how dear our church community was to her and how very dedicated she was here. Audrey was a long time friend and active member of our church dating back to the late 1960's. Her involvement included the choir, soul matters, the caring community, the dream group and the memorial reception committee. Please learn more about her life hereThe memorial service for Esel Rasor has been rescheduled for Friday, June 30 at 2:00pm . Please hold John Rasor in your hearts and prayers as he recovers from recent surgery.  Our hearts are also with long-time member  Richard Anderson  for the loss of his wife, Maria Anderson. Rev. Joel will officiate a brief service and internment of ashes of Maria this  Saturday, June 10 at 1:00pm  in the Memorial Gardens of our church. "To live in hearts that love is not to die."

Our pastoral care notices will be provided only in our weekly newsletter going forward. We will no longer send additional Pastoral Care alerts between newsletters. If you have a concern for a member of the congregation, please don't hesitate to contact Rev. Tina at 271-9070 ext 104.
Events Calendar
Our online  Events Calendar is live! Be sure to view it regularly to see the many ways to listen, open and serve at our church.
Happening in the Week Ahead
Literature and Visual Arts (LAVA)
All are welcome to a LAVA group discussion of  Last Report on the Miracles at Little No Horse  by Louise Erdrich this  Friday, June 9 at 7:00pm in the Susan B. Anthony Lounge.  In a novel that has been described as "by turns comical and elegiac, farcical and tragic," an elderly Catholic priest (who is secretly a woman living as a man) has served on an Ojibwe reservation for decades. The Vatican sends an envoy to investigate stories about a woman on the reservation who is possibly a false saint. The author herself is Ojibwe. Click here for more information.
Something Old Is Something New!
Join us this Sunday, June 11, immediately following the service, in the Lobby near the elevator. Rev. Joel will say a few words as he helps to hang the large colored photo of our 1848 Woman's Rights Convention plaque. This is a forerunner of our upcoming Sunday, July 23 church service, which will include a portrayal of the 1848 Woman's Rights Convention by FirstLight Players.
Rummage Setup Help Needed
On Sunday, June 11 following the service, the Rummage Sale volunteers need your help stacking and moving chairs, and setting up tables. Not hard work, but it will go faster with many hands. The Rummage Sale will be Thursday, June 15 through Saturday, June 17. For more information, click here.
Black Lives Matter
The Black Lives Matter/Youth Lives Matter Task Force will meet on Sunday, June 11 at 11:15am in Room 119. The main order of business will be Police Accountability. All are welcome to attend.
Currents
Our Currents group meets monthly to discuss in-depth topical issues that we select. All are welcome to join in as many or as few discussions as you like. At our next meeting on Wednesday, June 14, 12:15pm, we'll discuss the importance of voter participation in a democratic society and ask the questions:  Just what do we mean by "democracy" after all?  Can a democracy flourish in an atmosphere of voter apathy, voter suppression, and/or voter abstention? To be included on our email distribution list and receive articles on the topic prior to the meeting, email Dave McLaughlin, with "Currents" on the subject line.
UU's Reading Non-Fiction
Our book for June is Spain in Our Hearts: Americans in the Spanish Civil War, 1936-1939, by Adam Hochschild. It tells that many people of that time thought "the fate of the world might be decided in a small rural country on the edge of Europe." Forty thousand people from other countries, including the United States, volunteered to join in the fight. But could a "range of militias reporting to a crazy quilt of political parties and trade unions" defeat a "disciplined army reporting to a central command?" All are welcome to our discussion of this book when we meet on  Wednesday, June 14, 7:00-8:30pm. For questions, contact   Audrey Perry, 585-244-4013.
Aging Gratefully and Change
Aging Gratefully is a discussion group open to everyone age 60 and above. The group next meets on Thursday, June 15, 1:30-3:00pm, in Gilbert Hall. Topics are chosen by the members, and June's topic is "Change."
Upcoming Events & News
Accepting Nominations for the Greater Good Project
Do you know a community organization that empowers people and aligns with UU values? The Greater Good Committee is interested in hearing our church members' nominations for next year's Greater Good Project. We will collect nominations through Tuesday, June 20 at 5:00pm. To nominate a nonprofit you believe in, email Greater Good Project, or visit the Greater Good table after the services on Sundays June 11 and 18 to submit nominations.
Religious Education Staffing Update
As we round the end of the church year, we are saying goodbye to Dana Lundquist, Director of Junior High Youth and Coming of Age.  Dana and her husband are moving south, AND she will continue to serve a UU church there! We are grateful for her enthusiasm, deep UU commitment, and fabulous engagement with our 6-9th graders over the last two years! We will also begin searching for staff support for our Youth Program, as Jerry Ingram's position was not replaced after his departure this Spring.  If you know someone who may be a great candidate or interested in either position, please contact Sheila Schuh at 585-271-9070 x109.
Summer Solstice Event
On Wednesday, June 21, 6:30-8:30pm, our Buddhist Fellowship invites you to celebrate Earth consciousness and Buddhist awareness, connecting with nature's rhythms and focusing on mindfulness and community. The program will start with meeting in the lower garden by the labyrinth (east of the parking lot) at 6:30pm where instructions and plans for the evening will be given. There will be a ceremony of welcoming and an honoring of the four directions before inviting people to walk the meditative labyrinth in silence. As people enter the labyrinth, the group will be asked to contemplate "What is the light within?" When people exit the labyrinth, they will be given a candle to carry up to Gilbert Hall where there will be a combination of readings and silent meditative sitting. The evening will end with refreshments. For further information, contact Hugh Mitchell.
Say Goodbye & Good Wishes to Rev. Carlos
Everyone's invited to a potluck lunch on Sunday, June 18, 2017 at 11:30am (after the 10:00am service, and time to move chairs/tables) in the Sanctuary. We'll have plates and silverware. Please bring a dish to share. If you have a question, contact Chris Farnum.
Canned Fruit and Cereal
These are the latest requests from the Brighton Food Cupboard worker, fruit for hot weather meals and cereal for kids no longer receiving breakfast at school.  Bring a can or box to church on Sunday.  For questions or more information, contact Alison Wilder at 585-342-2459

Revel in golf - Join the UU Open
There is nothing quite like hitting a beautiful golf shot on a beautiful day with a number of your good friends - right? Well, maybe not for everyone, but if you enjoy the game of golf, do sign up to play in this year's UU Open. It is a fun golfing event where you can meet folks you may not have met before, enjoy playing from the fairways (it is a scramble format, so every shot is played from the best shot of your team), enjoy dinner and fun awards after the round, with the chance to have your name engraved on the coveted UU Open trophy. This year, we'll be playing at Parkview Fairways on Sunday, July 16teeing off at 1:15pm. It is just $45 to walk and $50 to ride. Sign up by emailing  Larry Eldridge. Include a guess at your handicap so we can balance the teams, and indicate whether you plan to walk or ride. There is limited space, so be among the first to sign up.
Environmental Climate Task Force  Green  Tip of the Week
Almond milk has been lauded as a fine substitute for dairy milk, but it is extremely water-intensive to produce; an estimated 23 gallons of water produces one glass of milk. Most almonds are grown in California, an area of ongoing water-scarcity. Cows' milk production has negative impacts of methane gas released by cows, and water-polluting run-off contaminated by their solid waste. This creates dead zones, such as the one in the Gulf of Mexico, the combined size of Connecticut and Rhode Island. Less water-intensive alternatives are coconut and cashew milks; production of both minimize air and water pollution. And now a new alternative: pea milk, which is the least water-intensive of all. It's a good source of protein and tastes like dairy milk. Reduce, Reuse, Re-Purpose, Recycle.
