New projects afoot at St. John's!

PARISH

Exterior Painting Project:
The St. John's parish is embarking on a renovation project. We are refurbishing the wood and painting the exterior of the breezeway and the back side of the main building.
The pressure washing, thanks to
volunteers Tom McDermott, Jim Elliott, and Jerry Stacks , happened yesterday. Lots of loose paint came away from the building!
We are looking at a three pronged effort to get this project completed correctly and in a timely manner.
Jerry Stacks and company will be working during the week days to repair/replace various amounts of wood rot follow by a priming session during the next three weeks.
We need
evening volunteers to scrape the old flaking paint. We have the supplies and two ladders (need to be very careful). Currently, we have four evenings that we need your help to scrape. It may lead into more nights, but we are scheduling four to get started.

On Saturday, June 24th, we would like to add the final coat of paint. We are soliciting all willing and able volunteers and parishioners to show off their painting skills on this day. We anticipate the church will be sufficiently pressure washed, wood replaced, old paint scraped, and the primer on, before we gather on Saturday the 24th.

Join the Summer Choir!
Come join the summer choir!
Now that our regular choir term has concluded, it is time for our Summer Choir. This is a
great opportunity for anyone interested in singing with the choir, but who would first like to try it out. Throughout the summer we will periodically sing anthems from the year as well as prepare for the choir term to come. The summer choir rehears from 9-9:20 before services, and rehearsals after the service to prepare for the upcoming term, which are not mandatory and specifically geared to people in the St. John's Choir. If interested, please speak to the choir master Jonathan before or after the services or contact the church office.
The funeral for Carolyn Makurat, mother of Jean Makurat, will be held on Saturday, June 17 at 11:00 AM at St. Veronica's Roman Catholic Church, 3460 Centreville Road in Chantilly. The Interment will follow at Linton Hall Benedictine Monastery, 9535 Linton Hall Road in Bristow. Jean's mother died in March.
The funeral for David Parker, Sr., father of David Parker, Jr., will be held at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, K Street in Washington on Saturday, September 9.
EfM is a program for adult Christian formation through theological education and reflection written by the School of Theology at the University of the South, Sewanee, TN. We would like to start an EfM group at St. John's if we have the 6-12 people necessary to start a group. All that's needed is a desire to learn and grow in your faith. There is a good amount of reading to be done each week, but no tests. The topics of study are Old Testament, New Testament, Church History, and Theology. The entire program is 4 years, but each participant signs up for a year at a time. Interested? Please speak with Carol as soon as possible as the group is forming now. If we have enough interest, we would like to start a group here in September.
Congratulations go to....
-Angela and Russ Hadfield on the birth of their daughter, Julie Marie, on May 25.
-Cecelia Sellars, who grew out her hair and donated 13.5 inches to a place that makes wigs for people who have lost their hair due to cancer. Thank you for giving of yourself to someone in need.
If you or someone in your family is graduating from high school, college or graduate school, please let Carol know so we can share the accomplishment with the parish family. If they have plans for their "next step", please share that as well. We congratulate the following graduates:
Kristen Tucker - Bachelor's degree is Outdoor Recreation from George Mason University (daughter of Val and John Tucker)
Erin Peake - graduated from Christopher Newport University (daughter of Tanya Peake)
Cecelia Sellars - graduating from Westfield High School and will attend William and Mary College (daughter of Teri and Frank Sellars)
Alexa Williams - graduated from Christopher Newport University (granddaughter of Susan Woods)

Summer is coming!
Many of you may be heading out of town for part (or all) of the summer. Please remember to pay your pledge or contribution before you leave. The bills that the church needs to pay will keep on coming in throughout the summer, just like they do at home. Please pay your pledge before you leave on your summer vacation so the church can pay its bills.

Out of the office
Carol will be out of the office all next week to attend the final residential component of the preaching program at Virginia Theological Seminary that she has participated in during the last year.

Reminder
If you are an LEM, lector, usher, crucifer, or torch bearer, please sign up for the dates this summer that you can assist. With many people away, it is sometimes hard to fill all the slots. Please sign up online on the Altar Servers link below. If you would like to serve in one of these roles, we can certainly use more folks. Training will be provided. Please see Carol if you are interested.

Stewardship and Church Vitality Day

This day will feature time with Bishop Susan and workshops on missions and outreach, communications, Christian formation, planned giving, and our new "All Hearts Open" annual giving program.
The day opens with remarks by Bishop Susan, then follows with vibrant workshops and roundtables. These conversations are designed to offer rich resources that lead to more engaged congregational life across all ministries.

Lamentation for the Forsaken is installed in Immanuel Chapel's Octagon Room from May 20 through August 10, 2017, and can be viewed during open hours of Immanuel Chapel.
Lamentation for the Forsaken is a new media installation that juxtaposes Christ's suffering and journey to the cross with the anguish and plight of refugees fleeing the Syrian Civil War. The artwork is composed of two distinct visual elements. The first is a photographic negative of the Shroud of Turin that has been aesthetically transformed with the names and details of individuals who have died in the conflict. The second is an underlying video stream created from sets of curated news media photographs that portray the lives and hardships of the Syrian people. The combination of these two layers generates an endlessly shifting digital tapestry that oscillates between the iconic image of Christ and the tragic stories of those affected by the war.
The artist Michael Takeo Magruder has produced a very limited print edition inspired by his work Lamentation for the Forsaken. The artist is pleased to present a print to individuals who make a donation of at least $500 to the International Rescue Committee (
www.rescue.org) to benefit refugees. Michael will be able to answer questions about his piece as well as the print on the evening of the reception.

WFCM has reminded us that their shelves can become almost empty during the summer months. Please remember those who are hungry when you do your grocery shopping and donate nonperishable food items to WFCM when you come on Sundays. You may put your donations in the baskets by the front door. WFCM is extremely grateful for our support.

Reminder
Every Wednesday evening, we have a service of Holy Eucharist and healing at 6:00 PM. The service is about 30 minutes. It is a perfect alternative for those who cannot come to church on Sunday mornings, as well as a good spiritual boost in the middle of the week. Come join us!
