Introducing summer
'Lunches for Vikings'
Did you know that, starting next week, free, nutritious meals will be available for Stoughton kids during summer vacation?
Lunches for Vikings is a new summer meal program aimed at providing lunches five days a week for children in need. The program is a collaborative effort of the whole community, with the school district, city and youth center, faith communities, and area businesses working together.
Meals will be served at the elementary schools, with a hope to expand the number of meal sites in the future.
Details regarding the program are on the accompanying flyer. If you are interested in volunteering to help (volunteers are needed to make sandwiches and assemble meals, take the meals to the schools and serve them, and more) you may sign up at

New for 2017-18: Get SASD text alerts
We are pleased to
announce that text messages will be available as an additional means of communication with Stoughton Area School District families for the 2017-18 school year.
You can sign up now for text alerts, but text messages will not be sent until later this summer. Sign up to receive text notifications about important district events, snow/cold weather cancellations and more.

Did you know the key ingredient to preventing summer learning loss is continued reading during the summer months? All five Stoughton schools have programs to promote summer reading.

Digital Citizenship: Gaming
May's Digital Citizenship focus was Gaming.
Do your children play games online on a computer, Wii, PlayStation or Xbox? Did you know that many games have conversation areas the same as online chat rooms? Even though there are real risks in playing today's games, there are many ways you can protect your children.
Here are some important tips for keeping your children and teens safe while playing online games:
- Game Chat: Be Careful! There is no difference between chatting on a gaming site and on a chat site.
- Think about your username, screen name or 'handle': Use a nickname, not your real name, and a nickname that is not going to attract the wrong type of attention.
- Be careful using voice chat: Use voice-mask to make you sound different, like a robot for example. This will help prevent gamers from knowing your age or gender.
- Learn how to block Griefers: If another player is behaving badly(griefer) and annoying you, learn how to block him / her, save any evidence, and report him / her.
- Don't share your account details: Keep your personal information secret in the online game, in the profile and in chat, even if people ask for this. Do not share this with other gamers or even your friends.
- Never agree to meet a fellow gamer offline if you do not know them in person: Meeting someone you have only been in touch with online is dangerous.
- Be careful who you trust online: Remember that online "friends" you meet through a game are still strangers. People you are playing with online, no matter how long you have been chatting with them or how friendly they are, may not be who they say they are.

Fox Prairie third-graders research effects of natural disasters
Fox Prairie's third-graders recently conducted
research about different natural disasters from books, databases and websites. Then they created a video using Adobe Spark, which is an online program through which they can add photos, music, and videos into their own project. Check out their work by following the link below!

River Bluff connects with sister city in Norway
River Bluff Middle School students have been learning more about Norway through pen pals and a visitor from Gjovik, Stoughton's sister city in Norway.

Record amount of scholarships awarded at Honors Night
A total of 118 students from the SHS class of 2017 were awarded $238,450 in scholarship money during the 64th annual Honors Night on May 17. That's a record amount! Thank you community for your support.

Sandhill students this week were invited to read to therapy dogs from
Dogs on Call as a way to promote literacy.

Volunteers sought for Fox Prairie summer garden maintenance program
Looking for a way to be involved in Fox Prairie's school garden? The garden's summer maintenance program offers families and community members the opportunity to harvest food to take home in exchange for performing basic gardening tasks in Fox Prairie's Outdoor Classroom & Garden.
Participants choose a one-week period during the summer months in which they commit to volunteering 2-4 hours of their time watering and weeding Fox Prairie's garden. Participants commit to visiting the garden at least two times during their chosen week and may harvest available fruits/vegetables to take home with them each time they volunteer.

Fair showcases sixth-graders' passion for science
The sixth grade Science Fair on May 31 highlighted many students who are passionate about science! Thank you to all of the students who put in many hours to create these presentations and to Mr. Reiser, Mrs. Zaemisch, Mrs. Heili and Mrs. Jemillo for supporting science education.

Norse Star awarded grant
Stoughton High School's award-winning student newspaper, The Norse Star, was awarded a $2,000 grant from The Evjue Foundation, Inc., the charitable arm of The Capital Times, on May 12, 2017.
The Norse Star will use these funds for registration fees for 18 SHS student journalists to attend the 2017 JEA/NSPA National Journalism Convention in San Francisco.

SASD News In Brief
SHS Fab Lab hosts visitors from Germany:
Members of the parliament from the German state of Hessen toured the Stoughton High School Fab Lab on May 30 as part of a visit organized by WEDC.
Wisconsin and the state of Hessen have had a sister state relationship since 1976.
19 SHS seniors will participate in collegiate athletics: A total of 19 recently graduated seniors from Stoughton High School will continue to be student-athletes in college.

River Bluff Color Run a success: River Bluff students raised more than $8,000 for their school during the May 26 Color Run. In the fundraiser, students collect pledges and then run or walk laps around the school grounds while they are doused with

Stoughton alumna inducted into National Honor Society: Katie Gagen, a Stoughton High School alumna and four-year member of the SHS History and Archeology Club,
has been accepted into the Phi Beta Kappa Society as a student in anthropology at UW-Madison.
