The Green Hospital Scorecard (GHS) provides meaningful measures of hospital operations, management, and policy adoption in the energy and environment sphere, and benchmarks environmental performance for hospitals alongside de-identified peer data. The survey collecting data for
2016
is currently still open! Participation is FREE. Data submission is open until February 28th, 2018.

Scorcher! 2017 ranked among 3 hottest years ever
|

Earth's
long-term warming trend
continues, and 2017 now ranks as one of the top three hottest years on record, according to a report released by NASA and the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).
Analysis
by NASA scientists showed that 2017 was the second warmest year on record, with global average temperatures across land and sea surfaces measuring 1.62 degrees Fahrenheit (0.90 degrees Celsius) above average temperatures from 1951 to 1980.

Canada’s Energy Efficiency movement keeps getting stronger

hen ENERGY STAR came to Canada in 2001, less than half the population knew what it was, and even fewer people knew what the brand stood for. Even the concept of “high efficiency” was vague to most people.
Now, the ENERGY STAR Canada program covers all sectors of the economy; from individual products and homes, to commercial and institutional buildings, to industrial facilities and their processes.
Energy efficiency programs are in every province and territory, and Canadians everywhere know what ENERGY STAR means, and how to use it.

Coalition releases Medical Imaging Equipment Study
|
|
Energy consumption data were obtained from three types of medical imaging equipment:
- Computed Tomography (CT)
- General Radiography (X-ray)
- Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)
A number of recommendations were made including the development of purchasing guidelines, energy behaviour guidance directed at equipment users, optimizing energy consumption of cooling requirements, and the development of a Business Case for medical imaging equipment purchasing personnel.

Proceeds from Ontario Green Bond to Help Fight Climate Change: Province Raises $1 Billion for Eco-Friendly Infrastructure Projects

Ontario has successfully issued the largest green bond in Canadian history, raising $1 billion for infrastructure projects in communities across the province that will help reduce greenhouse gas emissions and fight climate change
These projects will improve the quality of life for people across the province while supporting the objectives of Ontario's
Climate Change Action Plan
, and help Ontario meet its target to reduce greenhouse gas pollution by 15 per cent below 1990 levels by 2020, 37 per cent by 2030 and 80 per cent by 2050.

FDA restricts health care hand soap chemicals
|
|
In an announcement with implications for all health care facilities, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA)
restricted the use of triclosan
and 23 other ingredients in antiseptic washes and rubs effective December 2018, citing a “lack of sufficient safety and efficacy data.”
The agency deferred rulemaking on six other active ingredients – those most commonly used in health care – to give manufacturers more time to provide safety information. A similar
2016 FDA announcement
prohibiting triclosan and other chemicals in consumer products was the result of
legal action
to force the FDA to issue the final rule.

The impact of surgery on global climate: a carbon footprinting study of operating theatres in three health systems
|
|
Climate change is a major global public health priority. The delivery of health-care services generates considerable greenhouse gas emissions. Operating theatres are a resource-intensive subsector of health care, with high energy demands, consumable throughput, and waste volumes. The environmental impacts of these activities are generally accepted as necessary for the provision of quality care, but have not been examined in detail. In this study, we estimate the carbon footprint of operating theatres in hospitals in three health systems.
