Your Advocacy is Critical Right Now!
|
 The Iowa Afterschool Alliance spent time in Washington D.C. June 5th-8th advocating for afterschool as part of the Afterschool Alliance's Afterschool For All Challenge. IAA staff and program providers from Sioux City, Des Moines, and Dubuque attended a series of advocacy workshops and then met with Senator Ernst, Senator Grassley, and Representative Young to discuss the positive impacts of afterschool on students, families, and communities.
Advocacy is a critical piece to increasing kids' access to high-quality afterschool programs. We need you to tell your story to legislators about why afterschool is important. Check out the resources below to get started.

Grant and Proposal Writing Workshops
|

Child care center directors, owners, and board members! Join us for a hands-on day with First Children's Finance, learning new ways to reach out and touch your partners, stakeholders and funders through excellent grant applications and funding proposals.
This 6-hour workshop is designed for all levels, from beginners to those who would like to take a fresh look. Come with ideas of what your child care program needs and let First Children's Finance's experienced staff assist you in developing your ideas and proposal. Plan to leave this seminar equipped with ideas, tools and a great start to succeed in your next funding opportunity.

At-Risk Youth and Character Education Training

The Ray Center at Drake University is offering a discounted training on at-risk youth and character in Avoca and Des Moines in July. The sessions are upbeat and fun-filled interactive character education workshops for individuals and programs working with
at-risk youth (ages 10-18+)! Some of the topics covered include:

New Report Highlights Need for and Impact of OST
|
 The Iowa Afterschool Alliance has released a key, statewide report on afterschool and summer learning titled the State of Afterschool and Summer Programming in Iowa. Released officially on October 20, 2016, at the Summit on Advancing Academic and Social Outcomes for Iowa Children and Youth, the report details current youth and community issues in Iowa and how afterschool and summer programming can help mitigate some of these issues.
Also included in the report are program profiles from across the state and a report on what afterschool and summer programming currently looks like statewide. Read it online on the Iowa Afterschool Alliance website at www.iowaafterschoolalliance.org.

New Publication Series on Summer

 The National Summer Learning Association has released its first issue in a series of publications on summer learning across the country called SPARK! The first issue explores the six key elements of successful systems for summer learning, including data management and leadership. Read the first issue online here.
