IISE Annual Conference Highlights 2017 - Labor Management Focus

The 2017 IISE Annual Conference gathered members across the industrial and systems engineering profession to connect improvement leaders across aerospace, manufacturing, education, transportation and healthcare. As labor costs serve as a key indicator to reduce hospital costs, the following organizations and presenters tackled labor productivity standards and staffing opportunities.

Steve Vijayan, a measurement specialist working for Nemours Children's Health utilized integer programming and many other tools to assess and provide recommendation for optimization PACU staffing.  Patient Volume Prediction and Optimal Nurse Staffing at a Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU)

Sandy Furterer, an associated professor at University of Dayton provided a detailed analysists on development of labor management standards and recommendations to overcome some common flaws.  Labor Management Standards Development in Healthcare: Flaws and Best Practices.

Recent study on EMR downtime impact on patient safety 

American Medical Informatics Association recently published a study (Implications of electronic health record downtime: an analysis of patient safety event reports) evaluating safety events during downtime EMR period. Specimen labeling and continuity of patient identifications were identified as common Study highlights the importance of streamlining downtime processes to minimize any safety risks and cyber attacks risks.
