News and Notes - June 21, 2017

Last Sunday... we had our first "o utdoor" worship (that was indoors in the Memorial Room because of the rain) led by Alex Poulter!  Fabulous job, Alex!  At our  9:30 a.m. Worship in the Sanctuary we honored our high school grads, listened to children (of all ages) speak about their fathers .... and listened to a powerful sermon by David on the times we live in, entitled simply "Enough!!" You can listen to David by clicking here: Enough! - audio.

This Sunday : Summer Schedule continues...
8:15 a.m.  Outdoor Worship, on the Lawn by the Memorial Room, led by Katie Holland!
9:30 a.m. Worship in the Sanctuary, when we will bless our ASP participants, all 300 (!) of them, for our 40th year in Appalachia!

And don't forget  we will be having an amazing Strawberry Shortcake celebration after both services!
A note about Summer at GHCC from David
Summer is exciting! When you go away, have a great time! But when you are around, you can count on our church life to be inspiring.  Here are four ways you can help this summer:
1)   Are you an artist? We are looking for "Faith Art" - any art that expresses faith in any way. Each Sunday this summer, we will share a piece of artwork in the Sanctuary.
2)   Youth Musicians: we would love to feature you at a Summer Sunday service
3)   Flowers: We like to have flowers on the altar all summer, from our gardens! Cut a few from home, come on in, place them on our altar.
THIS Sunday, June 25th we will commission all our ASP participants  (300 of them!! ) and send them off to West Virginia with our hugs, love, and blessings!  They leave for Appalachia on July 1st!! Please join us to wish them safe travels and Godspeed.   AND it's is  our Strawberry Shortcake Sunday !!  You won't want to miss out!
Interested in making a difference? Wonder about the term "social justice"?
David and Alida are hosting an informational meeting with CONECT, a local gathering of churches and synagogues who work together on matters of common interest.  We'll gather on Wednesday, June 28th (note date correction!) at 7pm in Parlor.  Please join us if you can!
We call our weekly Bible Study 'The Gathering'... No pressure.  No assignments.  No guilt.  Give it a try, you'll enjoy it, we promise! Thursdays, at 10 a.m. and 7:30 p.m. in the Church House Library. June 29th will be our last Bible Study for the morning 10am group, and July 13th will be our last Bible Study for the summer for our evening group.
Our Field of Flags is Returning!
THIS SATURDAY, June 24th  at 9am, help us to "plant" over 7,000 flags to honor all our soldiers who have been killed in our wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.  You will be glad you did. (we'll need help on July 15th at 9am to take them down too) After they are up, c ome by often...  Pause... Remember... Pray.    Contact the office to let us know if you can help either or both days.
Please join us on July 16th immediately following the 9:30am service for our GHCC annual old-fashioned summer picnic.   As always extended family, friends, and guests are always welcome... this is the perfect opportunity to share your church family with friends and new neighbors.  The kids will love the fun old-fashioned games to play!  See how you can help by bringing food for our "organized potluck"... Check in the Narthex soon for signups to see what you can contribute!
SAVE THE DATE for a FUN GHCC Beach Day!!
On August 27th from 1pm-4pm, we'll meet at Jennings Beach for a cookout, games, sandcastle building, and MORE!  Adults, kids, families... ALL are welcome!! BYO... beach stuff (chairs, towels, etc) and we'll do the rest! We'll even have favors for the kids!  AND we will be joined by our friends from United Congregational Church in Bridgeport.  Want to help?  Want to join us?  Just let the Church Office know!! (ps... if you don't have a beach sticker, don't worry, transportation is available!)
Prayer Concerns :   We invite you always to be in touch with your prayer concerns; you can also click here to contact Anne Lyons , our prayer chain leader. We also welcome new members of the prayer chain (members of our church family who commit to pray regularly for those in need).  Just let Anne know!

Betsy Milicia asks your continued prayers with her dear friend Lisa, who is in ICU after a heart attack on June 10. Please remember Lisa in your prayers for healing.
