Hi all,
"In any workplace, the underlying issue is power: who has it, who wants it, and how it's used. Power is 'the whole ball of wax,' says Hetty Rosenstein, who headed a Local of public workers in New Jersey for many years. Yet many people are uncomfortable with power. They find it hard to talk about, and are reluctant to seek it. People shy away from the conflict and unpleasantness it implies.
'People want to believe that if we're fair and we're brilliant, then we'll get what's right,' Rosenstein observes. 'But it isn't enough. You can't just empower yourself. You have to take it away from management.'
[And, in my experience, educators think that if we just TEACH the District reps about what is right, if we just EDUCATE them about the issue, we'll win! But it doesn't usually work that way.]
When training Chicago teachers to organize their co-workers, organizer Matthew Luskin starts with a discussion of power: What is it? Is it good or bad? Where does it come from? Who has it?"

Action by WEAC Members Leads to Withdrawal of DPI Licensure Proposals that Threatened Teacher Rights
Due to the efforts of WEAC members, a proposal to seriously threaten teacher rights won't move forward, the state education agency announced Thursday. Thousands of WEAC members answered the call to action to provide testimony on proposed changes, which included the licensure system as well as sweeping revisions to teacher discipline procedures.

2018 Every Teacher a Leader Summit @ Lambeau
This year's Summit will be held the evening of April 27, 2018, through the entire day of April 28, 2018, at Lambeau Field in Green Bay, WI. Fifteen (15) teams of educators will be selected to bring their teacher leadership idea, develop that idea into an actionable plan, and meet others who can help them along the way! The application deadline is Sunday, February 18, 2018.

This grant was created from memorial contributions following Dennis Muehl's death in October 1995. Dennis Muehl was the first Director of Bayland Teachers United, our area's first Uniserv. This grant is open to all WEAC Region 3 members and staff. $300 in grants are awarded annually.
If you are a dues paying member of WEAC Region 3, and you want to attend a grant-qualifying activity that relates to building the Union, Political Action, Public Relations, Membership Training, or the like, then please consider applying for the Dennis Muehl Grant.

2018 Professional Issues Conference
Registration is now open for the 2018 WEAC Professional Issues Conference, which is March 2-4 at the Concourse Hotel in Madison. The conference will focus on the most important lever in improving our schools: building the knowledge and skills of educators. WEAC is committed to professional learning that is continuous, job-embedded, practical, and connected to student achievement.
