The (Sometimes) Tricky Business of Selecting Summer Camps and Activities for Gifted Children
by Molly Isaacs-McLeod
It is that time of year again for making summer plans. (At least for those of us who did not sign on for camps and activities while housebound during the polar vortex.) Here are eight tips on ferreting out options and negotiating appropriate placements for summer camp, as well as two thoughts. I hope you find them helpful! Read More...

Raising A Profoundly Gifted Child
by Amy Harrington
Profoundly gifted children are the outliers amongst outliers. These children are intense, creative problem solvers who have voracious appetites for learning. A profoundly gifted child will have intense focus on passion areas and will fully commit to anything of interest to the exclusion of almost everything else. Or, at least that has been my experience while raising my own profoundly gifted boys and working with gifted families. My oldest child is one of those children who just doesn't fit any mold. He doesn't know where the proverbial box is, and he is so far outside of it that it is merely a notion he once had to deal with while in school. Read More...

The Often Unspoken Pain of the Racially Diverse Gifted Child
by Tiombe Bisa Kendrick Dunn
In our society, many school-age children hear the clich "you can be all you can be if you work hard." The latter is especially true of children possessing high cognitive ability. Educators, parents, and society in general have extraordinarily high expectations of individuals with high IQ test scores. Many of these students are encouraged to enter professions and careers "smart" people are thought to choose, such as medicine, business, engineering, accounting, information technology, architecture, commercial/international banking, etc. Read More...

100 Words of Wisdom: Linda C. Neumann
In approximately 100 words, experts from around the world offer their perspective on some aspect of giftedness. View and share the online version.
We can become so overwhelmed with current challenges of raising gifted or twice-exceptional children that we lose perspective. We fear they'll never fit in, be unable to manage away from home, never be able to earn a living. But so many do manage to do these things. Despite rough times they may have as kids, most will eventually find their passions. Around those passions, they'll find acceptance and rewards. While they may not keep to the schedule and travel the path that most others do, be confident that they'll arrive at their destination nevertheless -the destination that's right for them.

Past SENG Director Linda C. Neumann is the editor of 2e: Twice-Exceptional Newsletter, a bi-monthly print and electronic publication that focuses on twice-exceptional children - those who have high abilities and LDs, either learning differences or learning disabilities. Written for parents, educators, mental health professionals, and others who work with these children, issues feature articles by experts in the field plus reviews of books, websites, and other resources. SENG thanks the Twice-Exceptional Newsletter for being a Gold Sponsor of our 2014 Annual Conference.
