Register soon to join OSU friends for a talk about the once-in-a-lifetime solar eclipse that will be visible in Oregon next month. Renowned physicist Dr. Randall Milstein will be our guest at the Golden Valley Brewery and Restaurant in Beaverton on Aug. 3.
Milstein is a geologist first but has a secondary career in photographing professional dancers and companies from around the world. During the holiday season he has found time for another passion. For the past 17 years he has performed in the Chamber Ballet of Corvallis in the annual production of The Nutcracker ballet. From performer to astronomer there is no question he sees deep within and beyond himself.
Over drinks and appetizers he will discuss the solar eclipse, interesting facts and safe viewing for Oregonians when they witness the event around 10:16 a.m. Aug. 21. As the moon passes between the Sun and Earth, it will block our views of the sun. This is the first solar eclipse over the continental U.S. since 1979 and the first to run from the North American Pacific Coast to the Atlantic Coast since 1918. It's the first total solar eclipse since 1776.

Superheroes bring food, fun to Rockwood community at annual fair

This year's Rock the Block theme, Superheroes of S.T.E.A.M., brought out the superheroes of the community, including Multnomah County Commissioner, Lori Stegmann, and Extension's own superwoman, Maureen Quinn.

Oregon State University Metro Extension nutrition education program faculty and staff teamed up to provide fun information, samples of flavored waters and a healthy fruit salad to Rockwood community members during the annual Rock the Block celebration Saturday, June 3.
According to Rock the Block organizers, more than 2,000 people attended, visiting 60 booths that featured community-based programs and social services for East County Rockwood neighborhood residents.
Extension staff members work with Rockwood community partners to provide families with educational opportunities to help them better manage and use their food resources, improve their health and become more self-sufficient.

Rock the Block began in 2011 as a free, family-oriented festival to help connect residents to resources and offer a community space for a day of fun together. The event has evolved to become a fun neighborhood fair that includes local vendors, resources and entertainment where residents can celebrate this very diverse community!
