Predicting When Commercial Airliners Will Be Torn Down
"The average age of a 737 or an A320 coming in for storage is about 20 years, with about 80% to be torn down," says Anca Mihalache, sales and marketing manager for Vallair. The Luxembourg-headquartered company specializes in "end-of-life acquisitions..."

"It takes a lot of planning to transport 40-foot-long flight controls, Ken Kocialski and Shawn Vaughn, founders of CAVU Aerospace, an aircraft dismantling company based in Stuttgart, Arkansas, wrote in an email. These parts must not only be removed correctly but they must be packaged to survive shipping to all corners of the world..."
- Popular Science

" World demand for air travel rose sharply in April, thanks to global economic activity and lower airfares, IATA data for the month show. Releasing April world traffic data ahead of the IATA AGM, which opens June 4 in Cancun, IATA said passenger international and domestic traffic data measured in RPKs rose 10.7% compared to April 2016, which was the fastest pace in six years ... Association Update
From Nigel Marsh, Rolls-Royce plc
Earlier this month I visited a metals recycler in the UK to see at first-hand how they're recovering end of service engine parts and scrap metal, especially titanium, to provide high grade ferrotitanium to the steel industry. This is a great example of how used components and production scrap can be cleaned, melted and returned as raw material to the supply chain. It's all a part of what we now call the Circular Economy; the concept here is that materials just keep on going around - material supply, product manufacture, use, service, end of life, recovery/recycling, material supply...it's a never ending circle, or that's the idea anyway.

In other audiences it's also referred to as 'sustainability'. The real trick though is to aim for closed loop recycling where the materials stay in your industry i.e., the titanium stays as aero grade, not in golf clubs! We know that in our industry we will continue to have a 'sustainable' supply of retired aircraft to tear down/part out and recycle but the challenge over time will be to develop more closed loop recycling for the sector so that we can continue to support ourselves as we compete with others for materials. It's also an essential part of managing our environmental footprint and decoupling growth from environmental impact. As time goes by, this will also involve a move away from just metal to composites as well. That's why as an industry we have to keep one step ahead and look to the future. So, at AFRA, as the leading organisation for EoL management of aircraft, we're not only dealing with the here and now but also looking to the future and to ways of working and innovations in recycling that will support sustainable growth.

To be successful we also need to share ideas and solutions. So if you have something that you think might fly, let us know!

Best regards,
Nigel Marsh

Association Updates
Government Affairs Program

The Government Affairs Committee held a teleconference in early May which AFRA's Brussels staff provided an overview of recent meetings with the European Commission. As a follow-up to initial EU outreach meetings, Committee members discussed what can be highlighted at the future EU meetings and have decided to put together a short document highlighting the industry's work toward circular economy which include: the industry's progress and recyclability rates for End-of-Life (EOL) aircraft, how the industry is striving toward more efficient solutions for recycling to get ahead of future regulations, including producer responsibility considerations, partnering with organizations to provide dismantlers more information about hazmat materials, and R&D to examine how new materials should be handled. In essence, the aforementioned document will serve as a means to provide greater context on EOL aircraft recycling, the industry's progress toward circular economy goals, and ways it is proactively approaching recyclability challenges.
