Watch for children at play
School is out for summer and that means more children playing, bicycling and walking in and near roads.

Chasing games and other play may move onto neighborhood streets. Be alert for small children, who may enter a roadway or step out from behind a parked car or other obstruction. Slow down and be prepared to stop.

Expect an increase in bicyclists, equestrians and other vulnerable users on rural roads. These slower-moving travelers should keep to the right side of the travel lane, when no bicycle lane is present. Drivers should pass carefully, allowing six feet of separation between motor vehicles and vulnerable users. Young children and less-experienced bicyclists may not use clear hand signals. Be alert for sudden changes.

Help keep children safe by teaching them bicycle and roadside safety. Look for a bicycle rodeo or other safety class in your area, such as the Bike Repair Fair & Safety Check, June 24 at the Cedar Mill Library or the Bike Safety Rodeo, Aug. 10 at the Hillsboro Brookwood Library.
