Greetings!

Morning Headlines:

Billy Graham, Dead at 99.

For decades, this man has influenced many, from the least of us to world leaders. He has had a personal audience with many sitting US presidents, from Harry S. Truman to Donald Trump. Billy Graham has been named by Americans as "One of the Ten Most Admired Men in the World”, a record-breaking 59 times with the Gallup poll. He has been known through the years as not only a world renowned evangelist, but as a kind, non-judgmental, accepting, and humorous soul.

Billy Graham has left a legacy and will be quoted for years to come. Here are just a few examples of his wisdom and charisma.

"When wealth is lost, nothing is lost; when health is lost, something is lost; when character is lost, all is lost."

"Courage is contagious. When a brave man takes a stand, the spines of others are often stiffened."

"God has given us two hands, one to receive with and the other to give with."

"A child who is allowed to be disrespectful to his parents will not have true respect for anyone."

“Take one day at a time. Today, after all, is the tomorrow you worried about yesterday.”

"The only time my prayers are never answered is on the golf course." (All of us golfers know this to be true!)

Billy Graham walked on this earth for over 99 years. I recall him saying that he has been prepared to die, but he never imagined being prepared to live so long. I think the headlines are inaccurate. Billy Graham has never been more alive then he is right now.

“The moment we take our last breath on earth, we take our first in heaven.”

"My home is in Heaven. I'm just traveling through this world."

In Peace,

Have you seen the new building on Escondido Boulevard? Solutions for Change are making positive changes to the city of Escondido.

Solutions for Change breaks the pattern of homelessness and poverty for future generations of families. Families entering their program gain stable homes where children can focus on their education without the worries of homelessness. The children of families at Solutions for Change finish high school, go on to college and learn the value of hard work and determination. Their mission is to solve family homelessness – one family, one community at a time. With this goal, they have pioneered an innovative and sustainable solution for families in our community – an effort that has led more than 850 families and 2,200 children out of homelessness since 1999.

‘Morality Over Money’: Escondido Passes Toughest Marijuana Laws in California
Off-price home decor retailer, HomeGoods, will open a new store in Escondido on Sunday, March 4th at 8:00am. The 23,907 square-foot store is located in Escondido Valley Center at 1352A West Valley Parkway. The new Escondido location will be the eighth in the San Diego market.
Many California state agencies are burdened with archaic procedures that often get in the way of efficient public service. That’s why I have introduced Assembly Bill 2087 (AB 2087), which will require all state agencies to establish modernization goals with specified objectives no later than January 1, 2020.

The bill seeks to establish flexible, family friendly flexible workplaces and efficient, streamlined processes in a way that will enhance cybersecurity, save money, reduce emissions, improve public transparency, encourage the use of cloud computing and other innovative new technologies, and enhance efficiency in all state operations. These technological innovations will help the legislative, judicial and executive branches operate more efficiently, encourage more women to participate in the workforce, and ensure greater transparency. They will also save taxpayer dollars.

These innovations are long overdue for all state agencies, including the one I’m most familiar with, the State Legislature. By using innovative new technological capabilities such as telecommuting, digital committee and floor systems and electronic calendars, we can drastically increase efficiencies, reduce paperwork and pollution, and save money spent on legislative operations.

As many of you know, trying to deal with the state’s cumbersome bureaucracy can be a time consuming, even maddening process. It’s surprising how our state, which sees itself as a national example to be emulated in so many other areas, can lag so badly when it comes to the use of technology in its daily operations.

California is too big and diverse to allow antiquated procedures, which in some cases date back to the 19 th  century, to impede citizen involvement. California’s government needs to join the 21 st  century. Passage and implementation of AB 2087 will be a big step in that direction.

Minority Floor Leader Marie Waldron, R-Escondido, represents the 75 th  Assembly District in the California Legislature, which includes the communities of Bonsall, Escondido, Fallbrook, Hidden Meadows, Pala, Palomar Mountain, Pauma Valley, Rainbow, San Marcos, Temecula, Valley Center and Vista.

February is our Children's Book Drive Month for a Legacy of Literacy. Our goal is to collect over 500 books for students in grades K-8 who do not have books at home. We have book bins for gently used or new books at the Thrift Shop, Major Market, Golden Omelet, Home Sweet Home Restaurant and the Escondido Union School District Office. Barnes and Noble is partnering with us for a Book Fair from Feb. 17-24. If you buy books at the Escondido store and mention Assistance League, they will donate 15% back to us for new books. Please help us nurture a love of reading!
