Faith, Formation and Fellowship

For you, O Lord, are good and forgiving,
and great is your love toward all who call upon you. - Psalm 86:5

This Sunday is the Third Sunday after Pentecost and the appointed readings are Genesis 21:8-21; Psalm 86:1-10,16-17; Romans 6:1b-11; Matthew 10:24-39.    We invite you to take some time this week to read them in advance so that they can speak to you throughout the week. If you don't have a Bible nearby, you can find the passages at this website: www.lectionarypage.net.

Pastor Debra will be at a table at Cupitol (812 Grove Street, Evanston) on Wednesday afternoons from 3:30 - 4:30 p.m. and is happy to buy you a coffee, tea, or milkshake and to chat about whatever is on your mind (or nothing at all). . . . Hope you'll stop by! Students who are off for the summer are especially welcome!

Becoming the Story We Tell: Lectionary at the Lakefront:
You are invited to join a small group at the lakefront each Tuesday in June from 7 - 8 p.m. to reflect together on the  scripture for the following Sunday, to look for connections between the gospel drama and the drama of our own lives and to become shaped by the stories that have been a part of our faith for centuries. We meet just north of Hamilton Street and the lake close to the playground so  that those who have small children can easily take part. [Rain location: St. Mark's parlor].

Going Where The Youth Are

The Church is wherever God's people are gathered and for our youth that is often not at St. Mark's - the building - because they are involved in so many extra-curricular activities.  Imagine the positive message we might share with our young people by Being Church where they are - at the ice rink, on the baseball diamond, at the debate club, at their concert.  Let's Be Church Where the Youth Are!  Take pictures, congratulate often, and remind our young people that they too are Being the Church wherever they are!  If you have events to add on behalf of your young person, please email Pastor Debra,  rector@stmarksevanston.org

Camp:  Abigail, Maggie and Sydney return from Camp Echo on Sunday. Abigail has been hiking in the Porcupine Mountain State Park in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, Maggie has been canoeing in Minnesota and Sydney has been at the main camp.  Be sure to ask them about their adventures!
Outreach and Social Justice

Midweek Lunch: Come and Join Us!
Each week, volunteers from St. Mark's and St. Matthew's work together to prepare and serve meals for our neighbors who struggle with hunger and homelessness.  On Tuesdays from 6:00-6:30 p.m. volunteers turn five pounds of turkey, two pounds of ham, one pound of salami, three pounds of cheese and six big loaves of bread into 60 sandwiches.  On Wednesdays, volunteers gather in Cunningham Hall to set up and take down tables and chairs, set out food and beverages, serve the meal and talk with our guests.   During the summer, many regular volunteers leave for vacation, and so help is needed on Wednesdays from about 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.  "Come and See" as we like to say at St. Mark's!  Join fellow parishioners Mary Pat Buckley, Rima Lockwood, Dave Himrod as well as folks from St. Matthew's to serve and meet our guests. Perhaps you'll be treated to an informal gospel music concert from Linda and friends. Contact John Lucadamo at lucadamj@gmail.com or 847-436-1701 for more information.

Sanctuary Congregations: Come and learn about traditional sanctuary movements and the expanding definition of sanctuary at Beth Emet the Free Synagogue (1224 Dempster Street, Evanston) on Tuesday, June 27 from 7-9 p.m. Kalman Resnick, an immigrant rights attorney and activist will be presenting a draft resolution for communities who are interested in being a part of the sanctuary movement and the evening's conversation will be facilitated by Cinthya Rodriguez, the Immigration Organizer for the Chicago Religious Leadership Nework on Latin America (CRLN) where she mobilizes faith communities to support undocumented-led movements for justice.  This training is sponsored by Evanston4All.  If you plan to attend, please contact Katie at community@stmarksevanston.org or 847-864-4806.

Coffee & Council is a a monthly opportunity for St. Mark's parishioners to engage with local politics and ask "What's going on?" as a community.  Join Associate for Community Engagement Katie Kuriyama and others on Monday, June 26, and the fourth Monday of every month, for coffee at Coffee Lab (910 Noyes) at 6:30 p.m. for a time of fellowship and to review the Council agenda.  At 7 p.m. we walk to the Lorraine H. Morton Civic Center (.7 miles) to attend the City Council meeting (roughly 7:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m. Free parking is available behind the Civic Center.  If you have any questions, including questions concerning handicap accessibility, please contact Katie at community@stmarksevanston.org or 847-864-4806.
Stewardship
Each month in 2017 we will feature a ministry of St. Mark's where we can "count what counts" because we are Bound Together in Christ. If you have a ministry at St. Mark's where we can "cou nt what counts" (lunches packed or served, pounds of produce distributed, hours of candles burned, number of notes sung!) contact Katie Kuriyama at community@stmarksevanston.org so we can assign you a month!

Counting What Counts:
In the month of May, 29 parishioners helped St. Mark's participate in  National Bike Month by helping our community reduce our carbon footprint one bike ride, walk, carpool, or public transit ride at a time.  Over the 4 Sundays in May, St. Mark's had 7 individuals ride their bikes to worship, 14 individuals walk, 1 individual take public transit, and 7 families carpool.  Thank you for participating!
