High school 4-H'ers and county extension council members are headed to Des Moines on Feb. 28 for Citizen's Day at the Capitol, a day focused on leadership and the importance of public service.

The day will start with a briefing on legislative issues, then youth will learn how to get involved in the legislative pro cess, how to contact and request time with legislators during session, and the responsibilities of a legislative page. Citizen's Day at the Capitol is an educational experience and a partnership designed to solve today's problems and prepare for the future. That's what ISU Extension and Outreach is all about.

Every year more than one million people directly benefit from Iowa State University Extension and Outreach programs, and millions more connect with extension online. These contacts are building a strong Iowa.
  • 4-H builds skills in young people so they are ready for college and careers.
  • Parents raise healthy kids. For every $1 invested in Buy Eat Live Healthy nutrition education, $2.48 is saved in future health care costs.
  • Iowa communities get skilled leaders. Extension and Outreach provides skills training for community leaders, local government officials, business owners, entrepreneurs, and volunteers to help sustain Iowa communities for the future.
  • Farm businesses improve efficiencies. Crop Advantage education helps producers better manage operating margins. Peer networks help farmers connect and increase farm business success.

Locally elected county extension council members help develop and implement local programs, secure needed resources, and provide input to ensure that educational experiences address county needs. This partnership makes it possible for ISU Extension and Outreach to carry the land-grant mission throughout the entire state, connecting the needs of Iowans with Iowa State research and resources.

There are 900 Iowa county extension council members; nine members per extension district. (Iowa has 100 extension districts, one per county with two in Pottawattamie County.) County extension councils maximize their strength with membership in their state association.

The  Iowa Extension Council Association (IECA)  provides county extension councils with a greater impact and voice on local and state issues. The association monitors legislative action and alerts IECA members of proposed legislation that might affect ISU Extension and Outreach.

Council members will serve as mentors next week, guiding youth as they experience the legislative process and meet with legislators. It's one more way to make Iowa strong.
