President's Corner

Dear Kiwanis Club of Omaha,

What a crazy storm we had on Friday night! I hope everyone from the Kiwanis family stayed safe and didn't have too much damage. I know some people are still without power down in Bellevue and the lake house where we hosted Florida State lost power and water. Luckily Jim Costello & Rick Berkshire came through again this year with the help of Don & Barb Story and several of their friends to make the event successful once again. We received a lot of kind compliments from the players as well as the coach and his wife. Florida State lost their first game but they are still alive after defeating CSU Fullerton in yesterday's afternoon game. More updates to come...

Our golf tournament is less than one month away! If you have raffle prizes or would like to sponsor a hole, please contact Shannon Norman at (402) 880-6988. Shannon is doing such a great job this year that she even recruited another hole sponsor at Chris Lake while we were hosting FSU! Thank you to Shannon and the rest of the golf committee for supporting our efforts to raise more money to support our Young Children Priority One grants and make a greater impact in the lives of at-risk youth in the Omaha community.

SPEAKER CHANGE - this Friday's speaker unfortunately had a scheduling conflict so we had to call in a substitute. Several people have noted my absence at a couple recent Friday meetings and found out I was drag racing with my family in Colorado. I've had a lot of questions about what exactly we do and how it all works, so I'll give a "Drag Racing 101" presentation this week and bring some videos. We'll start a little early because I have to get way across town by 1:30 pm but we'll have a good time and keep things informal. See you Friday!

LAST MEETING

"Papillion Manor Lunch and Tour"

Our members last week met at Papillion Manor for a wonderful lunch and tour as part of our K2B program. We heard from the administrator of Papillion Manor, John Turner, about the history of Vetter Health Services and their mission to provide excellent care for the aging population. He specifically spoke on the care and services given at Papillion Manor, who takes great pride in the services and experience given to their residents.

The on-site chef at Papillion Manor takes great pride in the food prepared for residents. Our group was treated to lunch of cranberry pecan chicken salad sandwiches, thinly sliced smoked brisket sandwiches with caramelized onions and blue cheese, coleslaw with jalapeno, lime and cilantro and a mustard based potato salad. It all was excellent! Residents there are able to order individual meals, if they are in the mood for something other than what is on the menu. If they feel like having breakfast for supper, the kitchen staff is happy to accommodate!

We were given a tour of the short-term and long-term units, as well as the physical therapy rooms, dining areas, etc., by our own Brandon Herring, Public Relations Coordinator, and Phil Ford, Nurse Liason and Joslynne Rider, Admissions Coordinator. Also guiding the tour was a former Westside Kiwanian and District Secretary, Bill Morrison, who resides at Papillion Manor and joined us for lunch, as well.

K2B is an opportunity for a Kiwanian to showcase their place of employment (business) to our club by hosting a lunch meeting or an evening get together. If you are interested in hosting a K2B, please contact the Kiwanis office (click here). We are currently looking for a location to host a pop-up happy hour that will also be a fundraiser for our Young Children Priority One grants!
