Selected Titles for June 2017

Welcome to the June newsletter.
Below are some photos of my recent visit to Shelburne Farms in Vermont.
With some of the most beautifully preserved timber buildings in New England, it is a wonderful place to visit.

Douglas Porter, from the University of Vermont, gave me, my daughter Kim, and her friend, an excellent tour of the farm, including this barn building.

Reynaud, M. Leonce.
Paris: Dunod, 1867, 1870. Third edition. Folio, 4 volume set pp 605, pp 616, 87 plates, & 92 plates of architectural drawings. Decorated Free End Papers. Text in French. Leather over Marbled Boards. Binding in Good Condition w/some rubbing & wear along corners & edges; Pages in Very Good Condition.   These two volumes synthesize the courses that Reynaud gave at the École Polytechnique or the Ponts-et-Chaussées (the oldest grande école in engineering.)  This treatise on the art of building, the behavior of buildings and their properties, and strengths of materials was based on the thinking of Vitruvius and the Greeks. Topics include - Strengths of Materials, Stone constructions: foundations, walls, supports, pilasters, arcades, doors, windows, cornices, pediments, balustrades, ceilings, vaults, stairs, pavements; wood construction, carpentry and iron construction. The theories of Léonce Reynaud (1803-1880) were significant for architectural history in the 19th century. "Engineer, architect, teacher, he was part of the architectural challenges of the romantic period (heritage preservation, railway stations, lighthouses.)  Between 1876 and 1883, he also published five other volumes, illustrated with photographs, of roads, bridges, railways, rivers and canals, seaports, lighthouses and beacons. The whole of these volumes constituted the publication "The Public Works of France." It is very rare to find a complete matching 4 volume set!
