In most recent Presidential administrations, particularly those of George W. Bush and Barack Obama, secular liberals and moderates would often follow whatever was going on, good or bad, in the relationship between religion and politics. But in this Trump era, many of us have focused so much of our attention on other shocking stories of the day that we've forgotten (or just been too overwhelmed) to pay much attention to the day to day happenings in issues such as Church-State separation, though we may care a great deal.

 

According to Eugene Scott of the Washington Post, one of the top journalists covering religion, values and identity in American politics today, the biggest religion-politics story in this current White House is the unparalleled level of influence that white evangelicals have had to the Oval Office, compared to a relatively pluralistic Obama administration. 

The American public is in fact becoming more and more pluralistic and less and less religious, but we don't see these changes reflected in the individuals who represent us in the White House and halls of Congress.
