This is the time of year when I am filled with mixed emotions! So proud of our Lab students and faculty for all that they have accomplished this year and so thankful for the upcoming break, which enables us to have the time and space to plan, improve, and dream BIG! But at the same time, I can't believe that our kids (mine included) are another year older and continuing to move up through, and out of, elementary school. It is with much pride and some sadness that we say goodbye to this school year. This will be our final enewsletter of the academic year, although we will stay in touch with you through special editions this summer.
As you know, tomorrow we will hold our Year-end Carnival and Field Day to celebrate the end of the year and give the students a chance to play and enjoy non-academic time with classmates. We are especially thankful to our 3rd graders who designed most of the games that we will be using for Field Day. We are keeping our fingers crossed for good weather, but if we get partially or fully rained out tomorrow, we will reschedule for Wednesday morning. Please remind your child that tomorrow and Wednesday are non-uniform days, and tomorrow kids should wear their advisory's field day colors.
Looking ahead, we are excited to share our
Summer Reading List and #LabSummerChallenge
. As a reminder, this Lab tradition sprang from a desire to encourage kids to continue to nurture their joy of learning, designing, exploring, and creating all summer long. Aside from reading the 1-2 required books, which will be used to support Advisory activities early in the year, there are no grades or due dates for this challenge! We just want to see what our students can do and allow them to experience the joy and satisfaction that comes from learning and accomplishing something! Let's see what our kids can do and how they can inspire us and each other! Take a look at the ideas that our faculty members came up with to get your kids started, and print and share this #LabSummerChallenge with your child and post photos and videos on FB/Instagram/Twitter/ #LabSummerChallenge.
Speaking of our faculty, I know that I am not alone in my feelings of deep appreciation for our staff. They are, without hesitation, the most dedicated, skilled, and passionate group of people that I have worked with during my career. I am thankful for each member of the team and all that he/she brings to our school.
Finally, I want to express my gratitude to all members of the Lab community for helping to make this second year so successful. We truly could not have accomplished all that we did without your belief in our vision, faculty, and community.
I wish each of you a wonderful summer and look forward to seeing you back at school this fall--just twelve weeks from today!

| LAB INNOVATION FUND DONORS |
WE DID IT! We set an ambitious goal of $200,000 for the first year of the Lab Innovation Fund. And, thanks to the amazing generosity of Lab families, friends, board members, foundations, and corporations, we raised $226,280 for our annual fund, plus a $250,000 grant from NewSchools Venture Fund.
We are so pleased to report that 76% of our families, 93% of our staff, and 100% of our board members donated to the campaign.
Finally, if you have an outstanding pledge to the Lab Innovation Fund, we hope you will make every effort to fulfill your pledge before the end of our fiscal year on June 30, 2017. Thanks again for a great year!

2017 SUMMER ACHIEVEMENT FESTIVAL
|
Come and celebrate elementary and middle school students moving up to the next grade level! You're invited to a family friendly, free community event on June 10 at First Ward Park.
Sponsored by IMAGINON, Google Fiber, CMPD, the Mecklenburg County Parks and Recreation Department, 92.7 the Block, Diamond Springs, and Recreational Equipment, INC., students will celebrate the end of the school year by participating in raffles, bounce houses, the Carolina Panthers obstacle course, and a dunk booth! Families may enjoy snow cones and a variety of food truck vendors as well. CMPD K9 units, medic trucks, SWAT vehicles, as well as the Charlotte Fire Department will be on hand displaying their vehicles.
The event is June 10 from noon-4 pm. First Ward Park is located directly across from our visitor's entrance at 301 E. 7th Street. News Channel 9 will be on the scene as special guest MCs. We hope to see you there for this fun event to celebrate Charlotte students!
