Reading Partners Succeeds
|
An inaugural
Read to Succeed fundraising breakfast benefiting Reading Partners was held on May 18 at Noor, in downtown Pasadena. A sell-out crowd of more than 100 guests enjoyed continental breakfast while hearing stories about some of the nearly 700 students the program has helped across Los Angeles county this year. The intensive reading tutor program utilized over 900 volunteers who collectively provided over 25,200 hours of tutoring to elementary school children.
"We were thrilled with the community support at our first annual Read to Succeed Breakfast! Thanks to the donations we received, we will be able to help even more students in Pasadena to increase their reading skills and be set up for success in school and in life," said Executive Director Laura Zachar.

Healthy Families Work Group
|
|
What do the families of Pasadena, Altadena and Sierra Madre need to be healthy -- physically, mentally, socially, and emotionally? How can providers work more closely together to deliver services to all in need? These are some questions being wrestled with by the Healthy Families Work Group. Around the table are reps of Young & Healthy, PUSD, City of Pasadena, Public Health Department, Day One, Pacific Clinics, ChapCare, and more. Creating community service hubs -- places where families could go to access multiple services near to their neighborhoods -- is also in discussion.

Active
Leadership Council member, Meredith Miller, spent more than a decade in advertising in New York and LA before turning her passion for marketing to retail and merchandising. Meredith and husband Michael purchased and recreated the world-famous Fair Oaks Pharmacy in 1989, and sold it in 2005. She then established Poker Chip Girl, a line of vintage poker chip jewelry and fashion accessories, before purchasing Webster's Community Pharmacy in Altadena in 2010. Their goal was to restore this treasure to its landmark status, and fill it with hard-to-find retro toys, gifts, greeting cards, jewelry, fashion accessories, and books. In 2014, Meredith expanded her footprint in Altadena, opening Meredith M, a trend-friendly women's apparel and accessories boutique next door.

|
Long active in the community, Meredith has served on many boards including the Altadena Chamber of Commerce as President.
"I'm proud to serve as the business representative on the CollPAS Leadership Council. As business owners and employers, we have the unique opportunity to inspire, mentor and coach young people as they make plans for their future. My hope is that many Pasadena, Altadena and Sierra Madre businesses will explore more opportunities to bring students into their organizations and serve their communities through collaborating with the schools."
