Mayor Levar Stoney visits Villa students

During a recent visit to our campus, Mayor Levar Stoney spoke a crowd of more than 150 Villa students and staff, offering words of encouragement as he talked about his personal journey and vision for the City of Richmond.

"Always shoot for excellence," he told students. "Outsmart your obstacles. Go over that mountain, around that mountain, through that mountain, underneath that mountain - any which way to succeed."

All students had the opportunity to personally meet the mayor following his remarks, and many asked thoughtful questions. The visit concluded with a tour of our programs which serve Richmond and more than 30 localities throughout Central Virginia.

St. Joseph's Villa's mission is to help those we serve face the mountains of autism, homelessness, and specialized learning challenges. We thank Mayor Stoney for the time and attention to gave to our kids!

2017 Summer Activity Guide
for Children with Autism
Children with autism often have special requirements when it comes to summer activities and programs. There are some excellent options available in the Richmond area, including those that focus on music, art, sports, outdoor activities and more.

Take a look at the Summer Activity Guide on our Sarah Dooley Center for Autism blog for more information.

Introducing our Class of 2017!
June is one of the most joyful times of year at the Villa. It's the month when we see our senior students transition to the next chapter of their lives as high school graduates. Their diplomas not only represent academic achievement, but also their capability and determination in overcoming the obstacles they have faced early on in life.

One Brook Road Academy student said in her commencement remarks, "Growing up, I didn't dress or look like most of the girls in my class. In middle school, many of my girl friends began to treat me like an outcast. Social media didn't help; it only amplified my doubts and insecurities... now I have faith that things will work out. Thank you to all of my teachers for making this opportunity possible. I am truly fortunate."

Publix Day of Service benefits Villa programs
Before opening their first store in the region, Publix is already making an impact in the Richmond community. On Saturday, June 19, Publix managers volunteered at Richmond-area nonprofits that feed hungry families. St. Joseph's Villa was fortunate to be among them.

More than 30 managers spent the morning landscaping in our Learning & Therapy Garden. Students grow fruit, vegetables, and fresh herbs in the garden year-round, and learn to prepare healthy meals with them. Community partners like Publix help make the garden one of the brightest spots on campus.

We also thank Publix for their generous donation, presented during their visit.

Staff Achievement: Treatment Specialist Meghan Peltz to present at Williamsburg James City County Public Schools conference
Meghan Peltz
Williamsburg James City County (WJCC) Public Schools has selected Dooley School Treatment Specialist Meghan Peltz to present at their division conference on August 24. Meghan will provide two training sessions: "Trauma Informed Care - Understanding the Impact and Building Resilience." The conference, held at Warhill High School, will provide learning opportunities for 170 WJCC staff members.

We're pleased to have Meghan represent the Villa as she trains teachers to identify and respond to students who have experienced trauma.
