Capacity Building:
A Wrap on a Short, Busy Week!

Thank you to all members who attended the various SUMA events the week of May 23. We crammed plenty of activity into the week after Victoria Day, and we appreciate everyone who took the time to join us.

On May 24, we hosted a workshop on "Government Relations and Advocacy: Strategies for success" from Terri Harris. Feedback on the session is rolling in, and we're happy members got good information out of it.

That evening, we also hosted a supper and presentation to kick off the Town and Village Sector Meeting. More than 50 attendees were treated to the story of our advocacy since the provincial budget dropped.

The Town and Village Sector Meeting got really rolling on Thursday, May 25. We had 108 participants from 57 towns and villages at the full-day meeting. Delegates from as far away as Buffalo Narrows shared ideas and challenges, and took in presentations from SUMA and other experts in topics such as solid waste management.

Government Relations Minister Donna Harpauer stopped in briefly at both the Sector Meeting and the City Mayors' Caucus, which happened on May 26.

Have Your Say:
Advocacy Week

SUMA has expanded our annual  Advocacy Days to Advocacy Week, now with more members involvement!

We encourage members to book a meeting with your MLA  during the week of June 12. Use that week to share the message of Saskatchewan's hometowns with all Members of the Legislative Assembly.

We've also created a briefing package  to help prepare for the meeting (even if you can't fit it into the official Advocacy Week schedule).

Nominate Your Community for a Saskatchewan Municipal Award

Is your municipality doing something innovative to better your community? Are you collaborating with neighbouring municipalities to achieve regional goals? If you answered yes to either of those questions, you should submit a nomination for the 11th annual   Saskatchewan Municipal Awards (SMAs). Four projects will be selected to win this prestigious award, which includes being featured in a promotional video, and formal recognition at Convention 2018.

Share Your Green Stories

During Convention 2017, delegates passed a resolution on the carbon tax that "resolved that urban municipalities assume a leadership role in adopting carbon reduction strategies" and SUMA is always happy to share the success stories of our members.

The City of Regina is partnering with SaskPower to use waste gas from their landfill to generate electricity. The facility was unveiled in March, with a 20-year agreement to generate roughly $1 million in revenues for the city each year.

Do you have a success story about how your municipality is leading the way on green initiatives? We want to hear from you, so we can share your success on the resolution page! Please pass along your municipality's story by emailing it to us at [email protected]
