Golden State Warriors in the Community
|
|
Al Attles, along with Hubie Brown, was named a co-recipient of the 2017 Chuck Daly Lifetime Achievement Award on Sunday, June 4. The Award, given by the National Basketball Coaches Association (NBCA), honors a longtime NBA coach's life in basketball and his "standard of integrity, competitive excellence and tireless promotion" of the game. Attles has been with the Warriors since 1960 when he was a fifth-round draft pick of the then Philadelphia Warriors. As a coach, Attles led the Warriors to their first west coast championship in 1975 by defeating the heavily favored Washington Bullets in a four-game sweep. As a Warriors Legend and Community Ambassador, Attles is a regular presence at Oracle Arena. Photo by Ed Jay. |

San Francisco Giants Update
San Francisco Giants Update:
The Giants' season-long slump continued into June, with this week capsulizing the struggles the team has faced on the field. The Giants began the week at home against the Nationals, but were unable to get their bats going, ultimately leading to a sweep on the road for Washington. This epitomizes the team's offensive struggles thus far into the season, with San Francisco ranked in the bottom three in the Majors for both runs scored and batting average. After a welcomed day off on Thursday, the team traveled to Philadelphia where they scored 10 runs in the series opener behind a complete game shutout by Ty Blach. However, in each of the next two games the Giants blew a late lead, an area in which they particularly struggled at the beginning of the season. After two months of the regular season, the Giants have yet to start firing on all cylinders, and will have to flip the switch soon to climb back into the division. This week the Giants continue their road trip in Milwaukee before coming home for some interleague play against the Twins.

Oakland A's

Oakland's designated hitter Khris Davis (2) offers a salute as he approaches third base after hitting a home run during their MLB interleague game between the Athletics and the Miami Marlins, held at the Oakland Coliseum on Wednesday, May 24. The A's would go on to win, 4-1. Davis continues to lead the A's with 17 home runs, followed closely by Yonder Alonso with 16. Photo by Darren Yamashita. |

Miami's second baseman Dee Gordon scored the Marlins' only run as Oakland pitcher Sonny Gray failed to catch the ball for a tag at home plate. The A's would go on to win, 4-1, aided by Khris Davis' 14th home run. Photo by Darren Yamashita.
|
Oakland Athletics Update:
Familiar weaknesses plagued the Athletics this past week, who struggled at times to score runs as well as on the defensive side of the ball. The A's began the week on the road in Cleveland, where they lost three out of four and did not score more than four runs in a game. A main contributor to this lack of offense was Oakland's inability to hit with runners in scoring position, batting only 2-21 in the combined four games. Defensively the A's committed six errors in the four games, and gave up five unearned runs in the series finale. These areas improved after the Athletics returned to Oakland to face the Nationals, but the A's still dropped two out of three to the National League leaders. After Sunday's loss, the Athletics dropped to a 24-32 record, the worst in the American League. On Monday, Oakland continues their home stand against Toronto before heading to Florida for a four-game series against Tampa Bay.

Sports Prep Star -- Faith Derby
Freedom-Oakley
-- Softball -- Senior
If she didn't have the nickname "Home Run" Derby before May 26, she certainly has it now. Faith Derby, the Falcons' senior catcher hit a game-tying two-run homer in the sixth inning, and then followed it up with a game-winning walk-off grand slam in the seventh, as Freedom won a wild North Coast Section Division I quarterfinal,11-7, over visiting Alhambra-Martinez. Derby, who entered the game leading Freedom in both home runs and RBIs, finished the game 4-for-5 with 7 RBIs. For the season, Derby now has eight home runs and 31 RBI. Freedom is attempting to defend the Div. I title and improved to 16-6 overall with the win.
