OUR IMPACT - STACEY'S STORY

When Stacey entered Shelter, she was already separated from her abusive husband. She and her husband were married for two years before he became addicted to illegal substances. When her husband was under the influence, he was most violent. During their marriage, Stacey and her children fled from their home multiple times, but would return due to financial instability and the fear of being unable to provide for her children.
Definition: Financial abuse is a common tactic used by abusers to gain power and control in a relationship. The forms of financial abuse may be subtle or overt, but in general, include tactics to limit the partner's access to assets or conceal information and accessibility to the family finances.
While separated, Stacey's husband entered the home, and became physically aggressive and violent towards her causing her to seek a safe, undisclosed shelter.
Upon entering shelter at Artemis House, Fairfax County's only 24-hour emergency shelter serving victims of domestic violence, Stacey and her case manager completed extensive safety planning to ensure that she and her abuser had minimal contact for the purposes of co-parenting. Stacey maintained stable employment throughout her stay at Artemis House, but had difficulty saving enough money to afford a market rate rental once she exited from shelter. In additional to financial insecurities, Stacey required legal advocacy and support with obtaining a protective order and appropriate child support for her children. With the support of Shelter House, Stacey became connected with legal resources in the community, and ultimately was able to exit to a transitional housing program that will provide continued case management, legal protection, and a pathway to citizenship!

Domestic violence affects 1 in 4 homes within our community. Shelter House has increased our bed capacity at Artemis House from 34 beds to 56 beds over the past two years, however, we are still over capacity at times.

Hosted by Cooper Ginsberg Gray PLLC, the 17th annual "Chipping In to End Domestic Violence" Charity Golf Tournament is back! This year's tournament will be held at The Golf Club in Lansdowne and all proceeds will go directly to the women and children at Artemis House.
