MEET Kristen Kiernan and Leigh Ann Gustavus. Kristen and Leigh Ann became active in politics when they worked on the Bernie Sanders campaign. Kristen met Independent Voting at a march in DC in 2016 and both attended Independent Voting's National Conference of Independents in New York City this March. The two participated in our Spokesperson Training calls with Director of Communications Sarah Lyons, as part of their preparation for the FLORIDA Charter Commission Hearing Process. Kristen and Leigh Ann not only testified at the hearings in support of nonpartisan open primaries, but organized a group of family and friends to attend and testify with them, including Kristen's father. The Commission convenes every 20 years and has been holding hearings across the state and will decide whether to put the vote on open primaries to the voters. Independent Voting is working with Florida Fair and Open Primaries to train activists all across the state.
Kristen and Leigh Ann are two of the leaders spearheading the fight for democracy in Florida.
"Florida could be the trailblazers for more free and open elections to ensure that our elections work for the voters and not the parties," Kiernan testified.
Gustavus added, "Partisan primaries are designed to advance the interest of the political parties but nothing to advance the quality of our democracy."
