Celebrate Black Music Month with us!
Music-themed art exhibit opens June 10
The Community Collective and the Community Music Center of Houston will present their second annual "Legacy Project" recognizing contributors to the Black Music Experience with a reception and art exhibition Saturday, June 10, at The Collective, 4101 San Jacinto at Cleburne, Suite 116.
The 2 to 5 p.m. reception will honor
Betty Parker, a violinist with the Scott Joplin Chamber Orchestra and retired music educator, and feature works by artists
Shawn Artis, Mack L. Bishop II, Dominic Clay, Carolyn Crump, Leonard Freeman, Alton Shelvin and
Charles Washington. The CMCH Ensemble will perform.
The Collective is open Thursday through Saturday from noon until 5 p.m. and by appointment.

This Thursday, June 8!
Deniz "dee! colonize" Lopez, writer, editor and poet, will read from and sign her book "dee!collection, the complete layers" Thursday, June 8, at The Collective from 6 to 9 p.m.
The book is a poetic compilation of the political, cultural and spiritual aspects of life from 2005 to the present through the eyes of an evolving Tejas-born Xicana woman. The poems explore the development of Lopez's ideology through non-fiction poetry and prose pieces, footnotes and even the messages in between the lines to reach the reader.
Lopez, a founding member and owner of All Real Radio LLC, is an artist and activist who has held position or collaborated with such organizations as MEChA, The Texas Death Penalty Abolition Movement, The Word Around Town Poetry Tour, Creative Women Unite and Voices Breaking Boundaries to bring a message of revolution, self-sustainability and community consciousness to the forefront. The themes of her artistry include the abolition of the death penalty, an end to police brutality, empowerment of women, immigration rights, black/brown unity, indigenous culture and history and self-mastery.

4101 San Jacinto, Suite 116, on Thursdays
from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. and Fridays from 1 to 3 p.m.
The Community Artists' Collective invites you to learn about and to
work on textiles, including quilting, knitting, crochet and embroidering.
