JEROME, Jerome K. [1859-1927]

Jerome K. Jerome was an English author best known for his comic masterpiece Three Men in a Boat. He had a number of occupations then including journalism and school teaching, and a number of disappointments with the rejections of many short stories and satires he wrote.

This collection covering a period 1888-1929  consists of 6 pieces of ephemeral and 21 books in total.

Overall good condition.

Letters of a theologian to a bishop on this important issue if allowed to approve the Jesuits to preach and to confess increased again for a response to a prelate's refusal that Mr. Cardinal de Noailles made its powers to the Jesuits.

First edition. 5-3/4 x 8-1/2 inches. xxvii,(1),[1]-381p. Original brown leather top spine end missing 1/8 inch, and  gilt type. Brown cloth boards. Corners worn and front board starting.  Ex library. Overall condition good.

Signature  - James Bain compliments of ( Chief Librarian) as well as another signature with date 1889.

James Bain (1842-1908), Toronto Public Library's first Chief Librarian from 1883-1908, was instrumental in developing the Library's Collection of rare Canadiana. As a collector in his own right, Bain also amassed a remarkable personal collection. was the first President of the Ontario Library Association in 1901 and Chief Librarian of the Toronto Public Library. Rebacked in calf, tooled with original label.  Original boards, overall foxing to a number of pages.
Overall good condition.

Siddons, Sarah Kemble, 1755-1831, English actress. She was unequaled. Siddons' warm, rich voice and majestic presence held audiences in awe, and though she shunned publicity, she won the praise of the poets and critics of her day. Her portrait was painted by Gainsborough and by Reynolds, the latter representing her as The Tragic Muse. Her statue, by Chantrey, is in Westminster Abbey. First edition. 8vo, xviii,(4),[1]-656pp New 3/4 leather rebound with marble paper boards and new plain end papers, with old library stamps, xLibris, on title and dedication pages with part of stamp offsetting onto Forrest frontis portrait.
Near fine condition otherwise and difficult to find a copy in this condition.

Of all the great figures who emerged from the Civil War there are few who can match the legendary cavalryman Nathan Bedford Forrest. His Personal exploits were incredibly dramatic. No Jacket. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Original dark wine cloth covers with blind embossed front and guilt type on spine and front. Spine top and bottom and corner tips , small nicks, otherwise very good,  Internally very clean, no marks. A nice copy of the hardest to find  (only 500 copies of this volume 3 were printed and thus the more difficult to find) in the series.
