Minister Duncan attends Congress

The Honourable Kirsty Duncan, Minister of Science attended the largest ever Congress in history, with over 10,000 in attendance, seizing this first opportunity since taking office to speak directly to the humanities and social sciences community. Congress 2017 welcomed a record-breaking 10,014 attendees from May 27 to June 2 in Toronto. Federation welcomes new President-Elect and three new board members

Following its May 28 Annual General Meeting in Toronto during Congress, the Federation welcomed Guy Laforest as President, Sandra Lapointe as Director, Associations, Claudia Malacrida as Director, Research Policy and David Sylvester as Director, Institutions. Stephen Toope assumed the role of Past President and was thanked for his remarkable service to the organization.

Lauréat des Prix de l'APFUCC 2017
L'Association des Professeur.e.s de français des universités et des collèges canadiens has awarded its Prix du meilleur livre to Alex Gagnon for his book La communauté du dehors : Imaginaire social et crimes célèbres au Québec. He has also won other awards for his book, including the Gabrielle Roy Prize from The Association for Canadian and Québec Literatures. Click here to learn more.  
From Far and Wide: German Studies in Canada
Following the Canadian Association of University
 Teachers of German's (CAUTG) 2017 annual meeting at Ryerson University, CAUTG is producing a conference volume to represent their academic and strategic discussions regarding the past, present and future of German Studies, or "Germanistik." More information on CAUTG's request for contributions to this volume exploring historical and ongoing institutional and political challenges can be found here.

New Quebec research and innovation strategy
The Quebec government has released an ambitious five-year research and innovation strategy that aims to make the province one of the top performing regions in the world for research, partly by increasing funding for provincial research grants. L'Association fracophone pour la savoir (Acfas) welcomed the new strategy, particularly its attention to the need for balance between different forms of research. More information here.

Connection Grants: Next deadline August 1
The Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council Connection Grants support events and outreach activities geared toward short-term, targeted knowledge mobilization initiatives within the humanities and social sciences. The grants are typically valued at $7,000 to $50,000 over one year. See if you're eligible and details about the application process here !
International Policy Ideas Challenge finalists announced

Global Affairs Canada and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council have announced the finalists for the second round of the International Policy Ideas Challenge. Ten projects were selected featuring policy ideas from Canadian graduate students, post-doctoral fellows and civil society researchers on such topics as environmental sustainability, trade and equality. 
Budget 2018 pre-budget consultation 

The Federation is preparing to participate in the federal pre-Budget consultation process, which is expected to officially begin this summer.
