Now available: the  2018-19 academic calendar ! At its meeting held last night (Feb. 20), the District 233 Board of Education approved the school calendar for next year.


Sophomore Viking Diver heads to IHSA State!

Good luck to our individual diver & IHSA Sectional Champion Jack Williams as he makes an encore trip to the IHSA State Tournament this weekend at Evanston Township High School. At last year's IHSA State tournament, Jack finished 23rd in diving.

Evening Community Coffee - Tonight at 6 p.m.
Would you like more information about H-F High School and have been unable to attend morning meetings? Would you like an opportunity to speak with school leaders in person? Please join Superintendent  Dr. Von Mansfield , Principal  Dr. Jerry Lee Anderson , other administrators and Board of Education members (if available) for an evening Community Coffee tonight - Wednesday, Feb. 21 - 6-7 p.m. in the South Building TLC. Administrators say that these informal meetings have been very helpful for them and that they have appreciated all of the direct feedback from our parents, incoming parents and community members. All are welcome!

Turnabout Dance: This Saturday
These are your final days to purchase tickets ($30/person) for this year's Turnabout Dance: A Red Carpet Affair! Ticket sales will end at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 22, in the Campus Store. The dance is set for this Saturday, Feb. 24, from 8-11 p.m. at Tuscany Falls in Mokena. The dance is for Grades 9-12. For more information, please call the Activities Office at 708-335-5525.
Viking Test Prep for SAT starts Sunday & Wednesday
There is still time to sign up for a  Viking SAT Test Prep class, offered by the H-F Assessment Department! Classes - taught by H-F teachers - will help better prepare you for the SAT exam, which will be taken by all H-F juniors on April 10, and will focus on Math and Evidence-Based Reading and Writing. Classes are offered Sundays Feb. 25-April 8 from 1-3:05 p.m., or Wednesdays Feb. 28-April 4 from 3:15-5:20 p.m.  Class fee is $150. Registration is being accepted through Friday in the Campus Store. H-F student-artists on display in Chicago this weekend
This Sunday, Feb. 25, seven amazing H-F student-artists ( Taylor Ausley - Painting; Amya Jaimes - Drawing; Caroline Larocca - Design; Emma McKillip - Photography; Emma Novak - Mixed Media; and Ryan Hutchinson & Ronnie Simon - Time Arts) will represent the school at the annual Illinois High School Art Exhibition, held at the Zhou B Art Center (1029 W. 35th St. Chicago). The juried exhibition - featuring works from hundreds of Illinois high schools and nearly 1,000 student-artists - will be open 1-6 p.m. with awards presented at 2:30 p.m. 
Same day, same location, three H-F student-artists will compete in the Illinois High School Senior Scholarship Exhibition , open from 2-6 p.m. with awards presented at 4 p.m. These seniors show amazing creativity and talent. Good luck to Taylor Ausley , presenting Our Foundations (painting on glass); Ruth McManus , presenting Crystal (painting on paper bag); & Andrea Zambrano , presenting Virus (mixed media)!

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT
At its monthly meeting held Tuesday night (Feb. 20), the District 233 Board of Education recognized this year's National Merit Finalists: (above left) Andronicus Marati and Alessandro Vazquez. Fellow finalist, Allie Mangel, was unable to attend. All three students are now eligible to receive scholarships from the National Merit Scholarship Corporation for college, and all three have exciting months ahead as they make their final decisions for next year. The board also honored H-F Mathematics Department Chair Dan McClain for earning his National Board Certification from the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards organization. He is the only current teacher on staff to complete the requirements of this certification so far this year. H-F senior and IHSA Sectional Champion Jeff Griffin competed at IHSA State this past weekend in Champaign, wrestling in the highly competitive 3A Class. Jeff returned home to H-F with the 2018 IHSA Runner-Up Medal for the 285 lb. category! His future is very bright, as he plans to study and play for the Division 1 football team at Northern Illinois University next fall.

IHSA Unified Basketball Sectional Champions
Congratulations to the H-F Viking Unified Basketball team for capturing the IHSA Unified Regional Andrew title last week by topping Whitney Young 37-19 in the semi-finals, then Thornton 59-45 in the championship game! The team will now head to IHSA State in Peoria on March 16-17. Go, Vikings!

H-F Scholastic Bowl: 2nd Place
Congratulations to the H-F Scholastic Bowl team for its 2nd place finish in the Masonic Sectional Tournament at Crete-Monee this past  Saturday! The team topped Plainfield North H.S., Plainfield South H.S., Joliet Central H.S., Crete-Monee H.S., Lincoln-Way East H.S. and Providence Catholic H.S. before losing to Sandburg H.S. in the final.  Competing this weekend were seniors Declan Cawley, Teddy Komorowski, Andronicus Marati & Luca Strohmeier; juniors Jimmy Humphrey, Ken Nakamura & Myles Walker; and sophomore Janellie Roach Congratulations to Declan, Jimmy & Myles for being voted onto the All-Sectional team by coaches in the Sectional. H-F was the only school with three members of the All-Sectional Team in the Sectional!

Viking Hockey: Headed to championship series
Congratulations to the H-F Viking Ice Hockey team for topping the Renegades 4-0 in a playoff game last Saturday! The team is now headed to the championship series (best of three games) against either Lake Central H.S. or De La Salle H.S.

Freshman wins Poetry Out Loud
Congratulations to freshman and first-time competitor, Victoria Olaleye, this year's winner of
the Poetry Out Loud school-wide recitation competition. Victoria won with her compassionate rendition of Good  People by W.S. Merwin. She will now compete in the Chicago Suburban Regional competition today (Feb. 21) at The Poetry Foundation in Chicago.  Titus Tucker, also a freshman and first-time competitor, came in a close second with his recitation of  Abecedarian Requiring Further Examination of Anglikan Seraphym Subjugation of a Wild Indian  Rezervation by Natalie Diaz, and will attend as the H-F alternate.  Of 25 participating students, top scores were rounded out by: freshmen  Grace Gallus & Charlotte McManus; sophomore  Zuri Irons; and senior  Joy Woods Regional final winners from today's competition will advance to the State Competition in Springfield then, hopefully, advance to the National  Competition held in Washington, D.C.

Senior studying in Ecuador
Congratulations to December early graduate Kennedy Leathers, who has been studying in Ecuador since January in her effort to attain fluency in Spanish before heading off to the AMDA College & Conservatory of the Performing Arts in Los Angeles in the fall. She is living with a family and attends school for intensive Spanish study. Kennedy will return to the H-F area in mid-March in time to attend prom and graduation events with the rest of her Class of 2018.

Student & alumnae published by DePaul U.
DePaul University hosted a book launch party on Feb. 12 to celebrate the release of Write Your Heart Out, an anthology published by the university's Big Shoulders Press that includes the works of three H-F alumnae ( Payton Gallery, Margaret PalomoCheya Washington) and one current junior ( Chelsea Oyorinde). Attending the event were Ms. Mustafah, English teacher, and Chelsea and Cheya, who read from their pieces and answered questions about the writing process to a full house, alongside other talented young writers from around Chicago. H-F's Creative Writing students were invited to participate in the anthology by Drew Weissman, H-F alumnus.

SCORE Grant awarded to ECAP 
Congratulations to Ms. Edwards, school counselor, for working to secure a $1,000 grant for H-F's Early College Awarene ss Program (ECAP)! The School & Community Outreach by Educators (SCORE) grant is provided by the National Education Association/Illinois Education Association with a purpose of encouraging educators to create opportunities for community service projects or school projects.
