FEATURED EVENT: Field Day
The most anticipated event of elementary school is upon us: Field Day! Schools have been holding their field day events since the first of June, but most will take place this week. With three-legged races, tug-o-war, staff vs. 6th grade kickball and other fun activities, what's not to love? Aside from just giving students something fun to look forward to, field day provides an opportunity to get kids moving and working together in teams to problem-solve and engage in friendly competition.

Digital Resources Help with "Summer Slide"
HSD Library Media Services provides some great student resources to help prevent a step backward in learning over the summer months, also known as the "summer slide." From the Student tab on our website, choose School Libraries. Check out the resources on the main page, then look through the pages by campus. There are many great fiction, non-fiction, and interactive literacy-based resources in multiple languages that could keep students busy and learning all summer.

Summer and Back-to-School Information
Please note that elementary offices will be closed as of June 27 and middle school offices will be closed as of June 30. Offices at both levels will re-open on Aug.17. High school offices remain open throughout the summer with some brief closures and modified hours that vary by building (please call the school for additional information or to leave a message for the office manager). If you have not yet registered your student for school, please do so this week, if possible. Back-to-school packets will be mailed home in early- to mid-August. Please review these packets for important information about the 2017-18 school year.

New Website Launches June 30

For the past several months, the Communications team has been developing a new website for our district and schools, which will go live on Friday, June 30. Along with the new site will be a new automated calling system and enhanced functionality for our District app. Your patience is appreciated while we continue to populate the new site with content and ensure everything is working properly. We will share additional information in late summer about what these new systems will mean for our ability to communicate efficiently and effectively, as well as some tips and tricks for receiving information in the manner that works best for you.

The Outpost at Shute and Shadywood Parks

The Outpost summer drop-in activity and lunch program, hosted by Hillsboro Parks and Recreation and supported by HSD's Nutrition Services department, begins on Monday, June 26, at Shute Park, and on Wednesday, June 28, at Shadywood and McKinney Parks. Free lunches will also be served at other locations around Hillsboro, Monday through Friday, from June 28 through Aug.18 (except July 4).

ESSA Update

The Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) is the successor to No Child Left Behind, and is the mechanism by which schools and districts are held accountable for serving all students and helping them achieve at the highest levels possible. Teams of educators, parents, students and others have been working with the Oregon Department of Education to develop Oregon's accountability plan, which is currently under review by the U.S. Department of Education.

Virginia Garcia Job Academy

Virginia Garcia School-Based Health Centers are putting on a summer program the week of July 10 to help build important and tangible life skills for students in grades 9-12. There is no cost associated with this opportunity, but students must register soon to secure their spot. View the flyer for additional information.
