8 Points You Should Consider Before Purchasing Used Forklift Trucks
Purchasing used forklift trucks requires an acute attention to the details. Unlike a new forklift, a used lift truck comes with a history that you will likely not know. More, its current state or repair is another factor that you must research. Far too many equipment retailers consider a few cans of spray paint all the expense they are willing to invest before selling it to you. The rewards for a good purchase decision is a dependable unit that operates with as little downtime as possible. Here are eight points to start you off on your search.

So you're thinking about buying a used forklift? Purchasing used could be a great decision, or it could be your worst nightmare.

"We're using our forklift to swap out batteries in our electric trucks. Is that really safe?"

Because of the size of an industrial forklift battery you are going to need the right equipment to swap out batteries safely. Your forklift can be part of that if you're using a battery beam or battery bar. OSHA, in regulation 1910.178(g)(4) states: "A conveyor, overhead hoist, or equivalent material handling equipment shall be provided for handling batteries."

Death of the Non-OEM Part Choice

In our conversation regarding what non-OEM [original equipment manufacturer] parts might be considered for an online catalog choice, we focused and almost agreed on mast or roller bearings. The biggest complaint about our collective experience with these bearing were the inside diameter of the mounting hole. Too big or too small and you've taken an already labor intensive repair and made it just that much longer in duration. Generally we've seen it go where in the end, OEM parts are ordered "to make certain" the repair can be closed up quickly. Plus possibly costing an additional day or days in duration, and additional expense to the dealership [if they're honest] to cover the additional travel time back and forth between the customer and supplier to get the right fitting part.

Service Vans, Mobile Business Ambassadors
Our fleet of service vans are quite likely the only part of our company a customer "sees". The van, the tools in the van and the inventory stocked on it all represent the level of commitment made to the customer. Then of course, there is the technician and the skills he brings to bear on the responsibilities and challenges before him.

"We gave a forklift operator a written warning over her unsafe driving through our yard. Why were we told that we needed to do more?"

OSHA under regulation 1910.178(l)(4)(ii) says that refresher training in relevant topics shall be provided to the operator when the operator has been observed to operate the vehicle in an unsafe manner. We believe that the refresher training will improve your operator's behavior in addition to sending a strong message to all employees that safety is serious business.
