Robin Bird

Dear Robin:

What's one easy thing I can do to make a difference this summer?

You can "just say no" to plastic straws when you order drinks. See "Featured Project" below and learn more about Shedd Aquarium's "Shedd the Straw" campaign here.

FEATURED EVENTS
(See also many "Additional Events" below.)

Coneflower Classic

(Not just for golfers!) Sign up for the Ouilmette Foundation's 4th Annual Coneflower Classic: Nine, Wine & Dine on June 23rd. This year's event supports Wilmette Park District's Family Scholarship Fund and the revitalization of Keay Nature Center.

Play nine holes of golf with games and prizes, stay for a wine tasting and casual dinner, and enjoy the live band "The Turnstyles" with dancing. Or skip the golf and start with the wine tasting at 5:30pm. Information and register here.

Alternative Yard Tour
Mark your calendars for our Alternative Yard Tour
on Sunday, July 23rd from 9am - 1pm. There will be eight exciting and inspiring gardens featured on this free tour.
Expect to see bird habitats that attract song birds and migratory birds, beautifully designed rain gardens that help mitigate rainwater runoff, a variety of pollinator friendly native plants in different settings, vegetable gardens, different composting techniques, soil care through mulching with leaves, drip irrigation to make your gardens water wise and a certified wildlife habitat garden. We will also have a beautiful local prairie preserve created by local residents of Wilmette on the tour!

We encourage people to bike on their own to visit the wonderful gardens on the tour as there will not be guided rides this year. Garden locations and descriptions will be posted several days before the tour. Be ready to be inspired by local gardeners that are passionate about their gardens!

Wine and Dine with GGW

Please join us for a wine tasting and small plates pairing at the Backyard Barbeque Store on Sunday, July 16th to benefit Go Green Wilmette. Meet GGW Board Members and learn about our role in the community.

All tickets include a raffle ticket and a discount on bottles of sampled wine purchased.    Attendance is limited to 40 guests 21 years and older.  Details and registration here.

BikeWilmette Meeting

Join fellow cyclists at a meeting of Wilmette's active transportation advocacy group. Visit the website here. Mallinckrodt Center, Tuesday, June 20, 6pm - 7:30pm

"Native Gardens" at Victory Theater

Audiences are raving about this play that focuses on how people share outdoor space.  "A disagreement over a property line quickly spirals into a war of taste, class and entitlement in Native Gardens, a hilarious comedy . . ." Buy tickets here.

FEATURED PROJECT

Shedd Aquarium's "Shedd the Straw" Campaign

Go Green Wilmette is participating in Shedd Aquarium's "Shedd the Straw" campaign to reduce Chicagoland's use of plastic straws that harm marine life and contribute to pollution and landfill waste. Americans use about 500 million straws a day - the same weight as 1,000 cars! Since plastic straws do not biodegrade and are nearly impossible to recycle, almost every straw that has ever been used still exists on the planet. You can help by not purchasing straws for home use and by telling your server that you do not want a str aw whenever you order a drink. Ask your favorite restaurant to join Shedd Aquarium's "Shedd the Straw" campaign. Learn more here.

GOOD NEWS

New Trier Plans Food Waste Pilot

New Trier High School is working to reduce food waste! After a successful trial, the District has committed to a full year food compositing pilot on the Freshmen campus in Northfield. They hope to expand the program to the Winnetka campus in 2018.  Kudos to the New Trier Sustainability Committee, Mary Allen of SWANCC and all the Freshmen who did such a great job!
