Our EHRPs met on May 20 and learned how to develop an elevator speech and prepare for an interview.

Think Outside the Box

As a recruiter have you ever had the perfect applicant apply for a position and he/she was dispositioned as "not qualified" because of a conviction or prior arrest record? If you and/or the hiring manager were not aware of the applicants record would you be in a different mindset?

If you live in a city or county that has adopted "Ban the Box" or the "Fair Chance" ordinance then your applicant pool has probably grown exponentially. If you do not live in an area that has imposed this ordinance, you may want to prepare your organization for the California statewide ban the box regulation.  On February 16, 2017, five California assembly members introduced Assembly Bill 1008, which proposes to add a section to the Fair Employment and Housing Act (FEHA) containing new state-wide restrictions on an employer's ability to make pre-hire and other employment decisions based on an applicant or employee's criminal records, including a ban the box component. Ban the box refers to a grassroots effort to remove the check box on job applications that asks if a candidate has ever been convicted of a crime.  Read more

Inland Empire SHRM currently has open board positions and volunteer opportunities for innovative and energetic individuals that are interested in giving back to the profession.  By volunteering with your local SHRM chapter, you can earn up to 10 (PDC) recertification credits per year.

- Acts as financial officer and advisor to chapter board of directors.  Guides the financial direction of the chapter, recognize possible financial problems, and bringing such problems to the attention of the board of directors for action. SHRM Conference - New Orleans

I am excited to attend the upcoming  SHRM Annual Conference in a few weeks in New Orleans.  I've been to several SHRM Conferences over the years and each one refreshes me and connects me with new friends and colleagues.  HR professionals have to be one of the more fun groups of people out there!  I always bring away tons of ideas to apply in my personal and my professional life.  I hope to see you there.  If you are interested in joining the IE SHRM Board members that will be in attendance for dinner or lunch, or a cup of coffee, please let me know.  I can be reached at [email protected] or you can email the board at any time at [email protected] We would love to connect with you!
