MAY MEETING RECAP
7th Marines Executive Officer Briefs Chapter On Deployment and Training
Lt Colonel Frank Dorio, Executive Officer, 7th Marine Regiment was  guest speaker at the Chapter's May meeting. Colonel Dorio updated members on the current deployment status of the  7th Regiment and gave  a very enlightening presentation on the perennial training cycles of today's infantry Marines. The sophistication skill sets required of the current infantry Marine is almost beyond comprehension to the old salts of yesteryear.

The Colonel also informed the Chapter that the 7th Regiment will celebrate its 100th anniversary in September and graciously invited the Chapter to participate in the planned two day celebration.

LETTER OF THANKS
From Mr. George Bullis, Principal, Desert Hot Springs High School

ODE TO LES CARLYLE, MARINE
adapted from a poem by Max McGovern

Les Carlyle was a special man
who came along
at a time when he was needed most.
A time enshrined forever.
When men  believed and  sacrificed,
When heroes walked the earth in mass.

When patriotism was not just a word but by what men lived
and judged the worth of each.
A Marine's life that most cannot comprehend

An era now gone
as this warrior's tour of duty ends
and begins anew in  that heavenly place.

What greater honor, that when a man moves forward,
he leaves behind in each of us
the best of what he was.

A defender, protector, supporter, victor, warrior, Marine!
One of the last of the breed of his era.

This Marine has reported for duty that takes him away from us now.

Those of us who remain behind remember and will continue to remember,
Because Les now resides forever in our memory a s quietly he waits,
The guardian of heaven's gates.

In case you missed it.

A dirty dozen Tun Taverneers gathered at Villagio's Italian restaurant for three hours of food, grog and camaraderie on May 3 including two new members Jim Irwin and Gene Mooring who both ponied up $100 cash on the barrel head for their initiation fee.
A hardy welcome aboard to Jim and Gene!

Quint Villanueva gave an outstanding presentation on the
Battle of  Chosin Reservoir highlighting the battle of Fox Hill where for five days Marines of Fox Co 2/7, surrounded by a force of 1400 Chinese soldiers, fought off their repeated attacks to seize control of the hill that commanded the escape route for the 5th and 7th Marines.  When his commanding officer radioed that rescuing Fox company would be impossible, a seriously wounded Captain Barber responded, "We will hold, sir!"
Captain Barber was awarded the Medal of Honor for his heroic leadership at the battle of the Chosin Reservoir.

This swashbuckling Tun Tavern crew will meet again in a few months.
Date to be determined.
Membership is open to all Chapter members for a small annual donation of $100.
